Jane Findley Little was my paternal second cousin. I knew her more or less all my life. In a sense, we were doubly related. As a child, she chose the double bass. I chose the flute because it was small enough to carry in my bicycle basket. That meant the private teacher of choice for me was Warren Little, her husband, the first flutist of the Atlanta Symphony. I had a lot of my lessons at their house, and I used to see her there, as well as at family reunions. One of the lessons of her life is about the importance of good music programs in the schools. When she started, the Atlanta Symphony was only a youth symphony, directed by Henry Sopkin. Without good music programs in the schools, he would not have anything to work with. Think about it, everybody!

At a recent Robert Shaw celebration concert, we were sitting close to the front on the right side. I was amazed at this little Mrs Little playing this big instrument. During the break I stood up close to the stage and caught her eye and gave a little wave. Got a nod & wave and a beautiful smile in return. Might be silly, but I was excited. She is probably still playing where she is now.

I met Jane Little about 25 years ago. She was always a woman that was very strong and knew what she wanted and willing to do what it required to get it. About 10 years ago I asked her when she was going to retire and she said "Not until I become the longest sympathy player on earth"
and she did.

May God rest her soul.

As a stage tech, I worked many years withMs Little. She always had a smile for everyone. She treated the crew as family not peons! I will miss her smile!

Ms. Little exemplified the love and passion of the music she so eloquently and skillfully played. I can think of no finer way to exit this stage then while doing that which you love to do. My thoughts are with her family and friends. She has rejoined the Sparkling Stream and left all of us the marvelous gift of music.

I was fortunate to have taken private lessons from Jane in early 1970's.

She was kind and patient with me. She always allowed me to play her museum piece symphonic basses during lesson time.

Once, when I whined and complained of finger pains, she played her bass from end-to-end; full vibrato, then held her tiny hand up to mine and asked, "Now, what was your complaint again?"
