GRESHAM, Dr. Jerome Celebration of Life and Legacy for Dr. Jerome L. Gresham will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 11AM at Allen AME Church, 1625 Joesph E. Boone Blvd., The Rev. Scottie Swinney, Pastor. Instate 10AM. Family and friends will assemble at the church at 10:30AM on the day of service. Interment Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors, children, Mingonne Cheryl Gresham, Stefan Lynwood Gresham (Verlinda) and Aldrin Jerome Gresham (Shaniqua); granchildren, Mia Mingonne McCullough (Lee), Ashley Gresham, Stefanie Lauren Gresham, Aldrin Jerome Gresham, Jr., Stefan Lynwood Gresham, Jr., Abria Gresham; siblings, Norris B. Gresham (Lacey), Sandra Gresham Parham; uncles, Herman J. Russell (Sylvia), Roger Russell, Jr.; Nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and other relatives and friends. Viewing TODAY 9AM-9PM. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Omega Service will begin at 7PM. I am so very touched by the many letters of comfort sent via this guest book. Jerome left a legacy of special relationships. My closer relationship was with his spouse, Willie Mae Shecut Gresham. It would be my joy to connect with her again.

Dr. Gresham visited his wife's first grade class in Sitka to teach us how to tell time. I remember him fondly, and was thrilled to see him on "To Tell The Truth" a few years later. I am very sorry to hear of his passing, his family should know that they touched many young lives.

Dr. Gresham, Jerry as I knew him, was a good friend at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka Alaska. My wife, Dorothy, and I have very fond memories of the years we spent together in Sitka in the company of Jerry and Willie Mae. We want to express our most sincere condoleances to the entire family.

I came to Barber Scotia college in 1966 as a young black man wanting to change the world. I met Dr Gresham and because of his leadership and inspiration I became a professional educator sharing the same values Dr. Gresham gave me. May God bless the Gresham family. We have lost a great man who mentored others to give back to their community.

I attended Barber-Scotia from 1967-71. As a freshman, I was having financial difficulties. I talked to everyone that I felt could help me but to no avail. Dr. Gresham spoke to our class one day and said that anyone who wanted an education could get it. I told him of my situation. The same day I received financial help. I will always be thankful to Dr. Gresham. May God bless his family.

I came to Scotia in 1967 as a freshman. I did my work study in the office of the President. I enjoyed working in that office and I thought Dr. Gresham was a brilliant man. My prayers go out to the family--Sallie Peace Graves (Asheville, NC)

To: The Family of Dr. J. Lynwood Gresham
I offer you my condolence on the passing of your father, grandfather, uncle, and other familial relations. I also offer you some remembrances.
Dr. Gresham served as the eighth President of Barber-Scotia College, from 1966 to 1974. He came to Scotia from having served at Sheldon-Jackson Institute in Sitka, Alaska. I am a 1968 graduate of Scotia and my last two years were under his administration. He also served and oversaw the College's Centennial Celebration--1867-1967. A part of the year-long celebration included the recording of "The Voice of the First Century: A Program in Music and Prose" featuring The College Choir of Barber-Scotia. Dr. Gresham is listed on the jacket and is mentioned on the recording. I will give you a copy of album for your files. I remember the very elegant Mrs. Gresham being on campus with her two young children and their Uncle Godfrey. I remember how supportive and encouraging he was when I wanted to organize a Charleston (SC) Pre-Alumni Club on campus. I served as its president. After graduation and moving to Atlanta, leadership was given to the organization of the Atlanta Alumni Chapter. I also served as President of the National Alumni Association of Barber-Scotia.
My remembrance of Dr. Gresham includes his strong support and encouragement for the Alumni Association. His legacy is one of strong administration, enormous growth of the student body, great expansion of the physical plant of the campus and great community relations. During his tenure, Barber-Scotia College, my alma mater, flourished. You can be proud of his contributions to the institution, to the students, and to the community. I am certain that other alumni share many of these memories and would thank you for his gifts to us. The Centennial Motto was "In the Beginning Faith." We say to you now, "Keep the Faith!"

Dr. Gresham has been a strong and supportive member of our family for the twenty five years that the YAGC has been in existence. He is one of the chief reasons that we have survived to this day as we weathered many storms over the years. He served as a friend, executive board member, adviser, consultant to the agency.
His wise counsel and his dedicated service to our agency will never be forgotten. The YAGC Family will continue to hold very fond memories of his personality and his quick wit in responding to the issues that we faced.
