I met Mr. Hunsinger as a young GDOT Negotiator during the 'Free the Freeway' in the 80's. I was as nervous as could be as I made the offer that day in his office. He went out of his way to put me at ease.
I remember his wit as well. He looked at the offer and said'Ms Ford, that's just not enough'. 'Why', I asked. 'It's never enough', he replied.
Our paths crossed at different social functions, and he always remembered my name. The complete Southern Gentleman.
I'm glad I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hunsinger and offer my sincere sympathy to his family.

Johnny and I grew up in West End during the depression. I remember him all the way back to the first grade at Peeples Street elementary in 1937. Johnny worked very hard to become a very good football player and student. He was involved in many activities as a boy that contributed to his very successful career.

My condolences to his family!

Dear Kathy - my condolences to you and the family.

I always looked forward to the impromptu conversations with John during my days with the Kidney Foundation when our offices were on the same floor in the Hunsinger Building.

John was a special man and his presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him and by those whose lives were made better through his charitable work. Quite simply, John was an inspiration.

To All The Family of John Hunsinger: As a Bulldog from a few miles East of Atlamta, I and many other Bulldogs will long remember John and his superb playing at Tech. He made a huge difference in the outcome of games we played during the early 50s, and was a tremendous addition to Coach Dodd's fleet of running backs. John was also a great man, as evidenced by the comments from those who knew him in later life. I feel sure that Our God has taken John into His Fold, where he will await the coming of his loved ones someday. May Our God Bless you all, and help you overcome this loss. I hope your happy memories of John will help you overcome the sadness you are feeling now. I know I speak for many at UGA who knew him.

My thoughts are with the Hunsinger family. I remember Johnny's mother, Helen, and my mother were good friends, and as a result, my sister, Connie Jones Russell Midura, and Johnny were also good friends, even though they were a couple of years apart at Brown High. I was just the little sister around all of them, but will always remember what a true southern gentleman Johnny was, and he always recognized me and said hello when we saw each other around Atlanta over the years.

I'm sorry for the lost of John. I am sure he will never be forgotten, but the thing that should also be comforting is that God does not forget dead loved ones. No he keeps them in memmory. Consider 1Thessolonians 4:13, 14. This scripture speaks about the ressurection hope for dead loved ones. Hopefully all of the ones that loved John will take this comforting thought treasure it. If you have any more questions on this topic, or any other topic feel free to send me a message!

I was sorry to hear of John's death. He was always such a giving person. I was at Grady High when John was at Brown High. After serving a few years in the Marine Corps I went to Georgia Tech and saw him again. After my retirement in 1992 and came back to Atlanta I would see him in various meetings with his colorful outfits of red, yellow, green, and also suspenders. John: You're a great individual. See you in Heaven some day soon.

I have known John since we were at Peeples St. school together.Knew his family when they lived in that one bedroom house on Howell Place. While at Brown High School, my wife Betty and I double dated with John and his girlfriend. Didn't go very far from home because his old car was not very dependable. John and I were teammates at Brown High and at Ga. Tech. He was a great friend and a thoughtful, generous person. Betty and I will miss him. Our loss is Heaven's gain.(Silk hat, gold coat and all)

Mr. Hunsinger was a true southern gentleman and one of my favorites. I always loved his hat. His greatest gift to me was his talented daughter Robbie Lynn, who was a cherished friend when growing up at St. Luke's Episcopal. May God bless his soul and comfort her, along with all the family.

October 29, 2010

John Hunsinger and I first met when his good friend General Aldo Garoni left a bequest to Corpus Christi Church in Stone Mountain. John and the General had equal shares in the property, so He handled the negotiatios for me and , later, he donated money for a mosaic of the Risen Christ in memory of Aldo for our sanctuary. John and I stayed in touch over the years and I knew him as friend and a good man. I was saddened by his death and I know he will be missed because he brought happiness to many people. He and his loved ones are in my prayers. -- Father Gregory Kenny, C.M.F., Pastor Emeritus of Corpus Christi Church, Stone Mountain, GA.

John always made an entrance, wherever--at his office parties, St. Luke's, or wherever--his late entrances were memorable. He would always have something to say about his children. After Jonathan came along, he would always regale us with the latest adventures and when Matthew came, he doubled his tales. His attire and smile for everyone will always be remembered. Kathy and children, I am so sorry for your loss. It is all our loss.

I have know Johnny since Peeples Street Elementary School in West End, then Brown Junior High and High School. He was a close friend of my brother Carl and they were in Scouts together. My father and his father played ball together at Tech High and Johnny enjoyed talking to my Dad about his father. I remember he always went back to visit the Principal at Peeples Street, Annie Johnson, until she retired. When my grandmother died, Johnny was the first one at the house. When one looks in the dictionary under "Nice guy", the first definition is "John Hunsinger". Always upbeat. Always smiling. Always offering encouragement and friendship. On more than one occasion, he offered me his wonderful seats at the ASO or he and Kathy would invite me to The Shaw Room where I met the Maestro on more than one occasion. His monthly "Happy Hours" were legendary. The "who's who" of Atlanta vied for invitations. Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia Tech, the ASO and many other organizations can look back on all that he gave in financial and moral support. John loved my Dad as they both were SAEs at Georgia Tech. Sir, you will be missed. I certainly enjoyed your company. Say "hi" to my Dad and Bobby Dodd.

I didn't know John as long as most of those who have submitted messages here. I first met him when I was Manager of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and his daughter, Robbie Lynn, was our Principal Oboist. That was in the 1970's, and I just knew him as one of our musicians' parents. In more recent years, when I became a subscriber and donor, I never ceased to be cheered to see him in his usual aisle seat in the Loge of Symphony Hall for Thursday evening concerts. He was always handing out leaflets inviting people to his monthly company "Happy Hour." I became a regular at those gatherings, and that's when I really came to appreciate what a great fellow Johnny was. He was frequently the last to arrive at those parties, making a real entrance getting off the elevator and announcing his arrival by playing a few notes on his trumpet. What a wonderful host and great friend. He didn't even mind when I showed up one night at one of those happy hours wearing Bulldog colors. I knew him well enough by then to know he would appreciate the joke and accept it with great grace. I was deeply honored to know him and will miss him.

" I have known Johnny since our Brown High school days. What a wonderful young man, athlete and student who grew to be a great man with huge success in the business world. I have been putting out a Brown HS newsletter for the past ten years and he would call me every so ofter and offer his encouragement and support. What a wonderful man he was who really loved his family. When he would come to our High School reunions he would have a small child in his arms. I enjoyed his mionthly parties at his building and he surely will be missed." Robert Davenport

"Coach" Hunsinger you will always be remembered for your warm and friendly manner and always great sense of humor. You'll be missed greatly by everybody that knew you, especially the members of the Atlanta Touchdown Club, Georgia Tech Alumni and The GREAT Characters of Atlanta. My most sincere condolences to Kathy and the boys. Coach, may you Rest In Eternal Peace.
