On this Inauguration Day — January 20, 2021 — John Lewis continues his good trouble. John, you said you kept the faith when struggling in the past for progress. That faith lives on. There is a consortium of scientific and medical organizations that are working together to address health equity and social inclusion. We are inspired by you, and refer to you in a consensus statement on needed progress. Thank you, sir, for all you did and for your legacy that continues to powerfully influence.

I am so grateful to this page. I am always so happy when I get a notification of a new post. Yesterday was MLK and while watching those historical news clips I caught glimpses of the young John Lewis. Then this morning I was notified of a new post on this page validating that there are so many of us that will keep his legacy and goals moving forward.

John Lewis was a kind and gentle man who gave his all for our survival. I met John in 2012 at a town meeting in Clayton County. I spoke with him and took a photo with him. He was understanding with regards to my concerns for the special education children and their rights. He will always be remembered for his loving kind heart and his dedication to the people. Thank you and RIP John Lewis.

Congressman Lewis,
Mere words cannot begin to describe what you mean to me. The actions of fortitude that you took when deciding to get into good trouble have made it possible for me, my parents and my children to have education that may have otherwise have been denied from institutions of academia that we once weren't even allowed to enter. Opportunities that may have only been dreams came into fruition and it was all because you and so many others like you who decided to get into good trouble. I thank you for your service, Sir. I thank you for your bravery and longevity in the cause for justice and inequality for all. I thank you for your diligence.. for the humility you displayed, the licks that you took, and the pain you're endured so that we all would have a chance to one day experience the American dream. I am proud to be a woman of color and I am totally blessed to have known the name and the legacy affiliated with Mr. John Lewis.
Thank you for your service Sir! Take Your Rest!

My 6-year old first learned about Mr. Lewis on an episode of Arthur, and has been inspired by him ever since. She's had a hard time with his loss, and wanted to write a letter to him. Here's what she wants to say:
"Without John Lewis, my brother wouldn't get treated by people like the rest of our family. (we are a multi-racial family). I had a nightmare where my brother was told 'You aren't allowed on the bus', and it was a scary dream. John Lewis worked to make things fair, so I want to keep making good trouble too. Thank you for making the world better." love, Coralie

John Lewis was an extraordinary and dedicated gift to humankind and its progress. In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. at the March on Washington famously said "I have a dream today." Martin also said in 1966 "Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."

John Lewis walked with and after Martin Luther King. He was the last living speaker on the program of that 1963 March on Washington. He went on to become a towering leader in the Civil Rights movement and in Congress, who battled injustice in health and all policies and practices wherever inequities existed.

Many medical and scientific organizations have come together to support increased diversity, serve the underrepresented, and end disparities in healthcare and all areas of society. These include the fields of sports medicine and science, healthy living, education, physical/mental health, recreation, and youth sports.

A Consensus Statement and Action Plan from these organizations were developed and released on 28 August 2020, the 57th Anniversary of that original March on Washington and “I Have A Dream.” It was "Dedicated to the Memory, Life, and Legacy of Congressman John Lewis and all such leaders throughout time."

On behalf of the thousands of professionals involved, we honor the life's work of John Lewis, Martin Luther King, Jr, and so many others. We will strive to achieve the dream that still lives. God blessed us with John Lewis and his "good trouble" continues.

So grateful for the courage and bravery Rep John Lewis acted on throughout his life! It seems he was "so strong [he could] be gentle, so educated [he could] be humble, so fierce [he could] be compassionate, so passionate [he could] be rational, and so disciplined [he could] be free.” (adapted quote from Kavita Ramdas). I am humbled by the years and years of service he gave to freedom, to justice, to helping the less fortunate and making life better & hoping for a brighter future. He inspires me to do likewise, in my own sphere of influence. He is undeniable proof that black lives matter! God be praised for the life of John Lewis! I pray his loved ones will be comforted and find peace as they mourn, knowing that all lovers of justice, freedom, forgiveness, love, and unselfish service are mourning with them.

John Lewis was one of my heroes. I don't bestow that honorific upon many. His unwavering faith in the human spirit, his willingness to sacrifice life and limb to effect positive change, and his capacity for forgiveness and compassion, set a high bar for all of us. His constituents were so lucky to have him representing them in Washington, D.C.

As a native of Memphis (white as Wonder Bread, I always say), I was never particularly proud of my "white Southern heritage" but have always chosen to see the beauty and strength in this lovely, diverse tapestry that is America. The example that Representative Lewis set by his life has inspired me to get into "Good Trouble" and to try to make a difference so that his dream of the Beloved Community is brought to full fruition.

Rest well, sir. Your struggle for justice is left for us to carry on, and carry on we shall.
