John VanHouten Obituary
Dr. John Bourke Van Houten, Jr., 84, passed away on March 24, 2022, at his home in Athens, Georgia. Born April 17, 1937, in Atlanta, Georgia, he graduated from the Marist School (1955) and earned a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry from The Georgia Institute of Technology (1959) where he was the first athletic trainer to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. After completing medical school and a residency in anesthesiology at Emory University, he practiced medicine at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA for over 40 years. He knew that medicine is a calling not a career choice and inspired surgeons and patients alike to rely on his visionary medical instincts. He will be remembered dearly by his beloved wife, Sallie, his daughter Meri Van Houten, son Will Kimzey (Megan), daughter Amanda Kimzey Brooks (Brian) and grandchildren Clayton, Justin, Katie, Sam, and Archer. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, with a reception to follow. Sallie, I am so sorry to see that John died. We were classmates and good friends at Marist. I well remember how devoted he was to you. It´s been years now since we saw each other but his vitality and strong outlook stay vividly in my memory. Please accept my sincere condolences. Mike Doyle

What wonderful friends and neighbors Dr. John and Sallie were. All of the Quinton´s enjoyed our friendship over the years and cherish many memories. John was always there in our many times of need. He was a wonderful doctor, friend and neighbor. And Billy´s loyal GT friend. We loved him!!! Praying for the family to feel the loving and comforting presence of our Lord.

John was one of the most caring and giving person . He was the father to my younger brother that shaped him into the wonderful man he is today . John was instrumental in the survival of our family. He gave my mother a place to teach and nurture so many in swimming and aquatics. He provided her with a place to survive and excell. He was there for us all when she was struck by an aneurism and helped guide all her children in letting her go. I as the eldest cannot ever forget his compassion and love for my family. A true friend and mentor and an admirable capacity for love. I feel so privileged to have called this man friend. My heart holds all his family close and join in your sorrow. Thank you John for all your kindness and love.
