Sorry that I was of town & did not know of Joe's death until I read it in the Emerirtus College News.

I ama radiologist (adult-type) who worked sporadiacally with Joe from time to time. He was one of the finest and best-respected physicians that I have ever known. We became close friends over the years, and it is a friendship that I shall always cherish.

My sincere condolences are extended to his family.

If all of his professional honors were to be omitted, Dr. Patterson's kindness alone would make him a prince among gentlemen and physicians. The world is a better place because of him.

I first met Dr. Patterson when I was a five year old patient at Eggleston in 1962. The two things that I remember about Eggleston were that the hospital provided "playrooms" on the end of each patient hall, and the doctor who ran the place knew our names. On subsequent follow-up visits to Eggleston over the years, I remember that our family would always turn left in the lobby and go pay Dr. Patterson a social call. He always took time from whatever he was doing to treat us like welcomed family. I will always cherish the visits with Dr. Patterson.

Dr.Patterson's superior medical expertise and his love of medicine is only exceeded by his love of people and the genuine love and care for people in all walks of life.

When I was an employee of H. Egleston Hospital in the 80's, I met Dr. Patterson. He always took the time to say hello and often he would invite you to chat with him by just the general interest he took in all people. He listened to my cares concerning my daughter who had runaway, and how he wanted to know if I had heard from her and he was thinking of her and prayed she would return safely. She did return safely. His concern was real. He also drew out of me the hopes I had to go back and obtain a Master's degree and go into pastoral care/hosp. I was not the only person to whom he championed

our "dreams" and goals, but many will tell you how he helped them have success by believing in them and the good that they could achieve.

Just the genuine concern he had for me when he was very busy and had great responsibility, spoke volumes about the man. He was humble, caring, sensitive of other's needs, and was indeed a true example of a healer, although he would be the first to "shy at that statement." Thank you Dr. P, you were a rare jewel in this world, I thank you for caring for children and for grown-ups alike.

Your caring for the parents and treating them with dignity and respect at H. Egleston Hospital was always a delight for me to see. You truly made them feel a little better while you gave their children the best of care and love.

My love and sympathy to all of the family; you have a great heritage. He loved you very much and was so proud of each of you.
