Juanita Milam Obituary

MILAM, Juanita Juanita (Nita) Davis Milam, 78, of Duluth, died September 16, 2014 after suffering with PSP- (Progressive Supranuclear Palsey) a rare neurodegenerative brain disease. A Graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Friday September 19, 2014 at Peachtree Memorial Park, Norcross. A Celebration of Nita's life will be held 2:00 PM on Friday at Duluth First Baptist Church. The family will be available to receive friends after the service. Juanita was born to the late Lewis and Martha Davis, January 4, 1936, in Ellijay, GA. She graduated first in her class from Gilmer County High School and went on to receive a teaching degree from North Georgia College, and a master's in Elementary Counseling from West Georgia College. North Georgia College is where she met the love of her life, Cadet Charles (C.R.) Milam of Duluth. The couple was married August 9, 1959 and had just celebrated 55 years of marriage last month. Nita spent 11 years teaching school in Duluth and even helped open B.B. Harris Elementary. She spent another 19 years as an Elementary School Counselor and was honored for her pioneering work...receiving Counselor of the Year in 1985 in Gwinnett County, the State of Georgia and then being named as the first National Elementary Counselor of the Year. She retired in 1993 after 30 years and will always be remembered for her work and helping numerous children and parents. Nita was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Duluth until her health prevented her attendance. Previously, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, friends and family. Nita is survived by her husband, Charles (C.R.) Milam of Duluth; three children, son, Jim and Lisa Milam of Dunwoody, daughter Suzanne and Braxton Roberts of Loganville, and daughter, Donna and Tom Adams of Lawrenceville. Seven grandchildren, Chaz and Tyler Adams, Rachel and Olivia Milam, and Brax, Gaines, and Myla Roberts: Three sisters, Mildred Barie of Vinings, Betty Sue Jarrett of Ellijay and Eurilla Hyatt of Jasper, as well as two brother- in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Nita was preceded in death by four brothers, Herman Davis, Truman Davis, Raymond Davis, and Fred Davis and by a sister, Emma Dye. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Duluth First Baptist Church in memory of Nita.
