Louisa McFADDEN Obituary

McFADDEN, Louisa W. Louisa Walton McFadden of Atlanta, 75, passed away on November 22nd, 2016. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Parker Walton, of Social Circle. Always a serious scholar, Louisa graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude, with a Bachelors Degree in History from Agnes Scott College. She went on to earn her Masters in Social Work from The University of Pennsylvania. She was an active member of the John Clarke Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in Social Circle and The Governor Frances Lovelace Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century in Atlanta. Louisa was a passionate advocate for the less fortunate. She served as chairperson for the Child Welfare Advisory Committee for Fulton County and she served as Social Worker at Georgia Mental Health Institute. Although she took a lengthy pause in her career to devote herself to the raising of her three children, she returned to her professional passion and worked as a Crisis Interventionist for DeKalb County Crisis Intervention Unit until her retirement. Although a timeless southern woman who disliked frivolous euphemisms, I wish to extol her lesser-known achievements. She was a zealous advocate for correct grammar, read voraciously and typed faster than any mortal. Like her own mother, Louisa preferred baking soda for toothpastes. Her daughter continues this tradition. She was a steady driver, although she was less observant of speed limits. A natural night owl, Louisa could often be found watching CSPAN or her favorite sport of Tennis. She was more traditional when it came to her political leanings but was assuredly tolerant of other people's views, even if they differed from her own. She will always be remembered for her sly, sideways smile as she asked probing questions, proving a point with not only her family but her friends as well. Her bedside manner, in caring for the mentally ill, a child with newly missing wisdom teeth, or any friend who needed aide, was surpassed only by her dry wit and sense of humor. Although everyone else knew of Louisa's stunning beauty, she would not hear of such foolishness during her lifetime. She loved big hugs and had no patience for the putting on of airs. Louisa was a talented classical pianist and could often be found moving people to tears as she tickled the ivories on her antique Steinway grand piano. As such, she could often be found at classical music concerts at Emory University. The works of Carl Jung fascinated her. She even attended (and succeeded) a vision quest in Canada. Her love of her various animals (cats and dogs, alike) may have, perhaps, superseded her love of people. When it came to friendship, Louisa truly lived The Golden Rule. There just was no better friend to be had. She was always supportive of her children's endeavors and adventures, even if she didn't happen to agree with their choices. She was always equipped to comfort them if ever needed. She leaves a brother, Mr. Joseph Moore Walton and sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Walton; a son, Mr. Isaac Joseph McFadden, III; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Tilghman McFadden and son-in-law, Mr. Steven Allen Holdsworth; Two grandchildren, Carter William Aldinger, Jr. and Addie McFadden Aldinger. She is the mother of the late Dr. Katherine Walton McFadden and son-in-law, Mr. Okan Demirman. She also leaves a son-in-love, Dr. Jeffrey Layne Cox.

Louisa was simply amazing as she assessed clients who sought help or were brought to the DeKalb Crisis Center in need of care. Her thorough and caring approach, kindness and advocacy and professional capabilities supported the citizens and families during the behavioral health crises. She was a member of the night team, valued by her coworkers and administrators as she prioritized the patient. It has been a great privilege to work with her in those years.
