Lucy Gordon Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

GORDON, Lucy LUCY HALL GORDON Lucy Hall Gordon, of Atlanta and Macon, Ga., passed away peacefully with her son by her side on September 28, 2009, at her residence in Atlanta, following a gradual decline in health. She was born in Palmetto Georgia. At young ages, she and her two siblings lost their older brother and mother within six months of each other. They were blessed, however, with a large extended family of aunts and uncles, including Raymond Cook and his wife Mattie, who helped their father, William Henry Hall, adjust to the role of single parent at the height of the depression. Upon graduation from Campbell High School, Fairburn, GA (class of 1935) Lucy Gordon enrolled in Marsh Business School in Atlanta. Upon completion, she went to work for Linde Air Products in Atlanta. Shortly after moving to Atlanta she met the love of her life, Don W. Gordon from Mt. Gilead, Ohio. She met her future husband while he attended training for the army in Atlanta. They became engaged before he left to serve in WW II. After the war, he promptly returned to Atlanta to marry Lucy Hall. The newlywed couple relocated to his hometown in Ohio, where they had two sons, Don and John Gordon. Missing her family and her native south, the Gordon family relocated to Atlanta in 1958. In 1960, they moved to Macon where Don Gordon participated in starting The Georgia Bank & Trust Company, from which he retired as President & CEO in 1982. Lucy Gordon was above all devoted to her family. She excelled as a homemaker, gourmet cook and loved to sew. She had a passion for writing and reciting poetry, and was an avid story teller. She was a member of The Mulberry Street Methodist Church in Macon and was a "privileged widow" of The Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta. She is preceded in death by her husband, Don W. Gordon; father, William Henry Hall; mother, Martha Cook Hall; brothers Thomas and Hulet; and sister Margaret Bowling. She is survived by her sons Don and his wife Annette of Tampa, Florida and John and his wife Helen of Atlanta. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Don, Jr. and Caroline of Tampa and John, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calf., Spencer and Grayson of Atlanta. The family request memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Skyland Trail in Atlanta (1903 North Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30319) or The Friends of English Avenue, (c/o The Bill Maness Outreach Center - Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3434 Roswell Rd. NW, Atlanta, Ga. 30305). The family will receive guest at 6:00pm, Wednesday September 30th from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm at the home of John Gordon in northwest Atlanta. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church - 360 Peachtree St., in downtown Atlanta - at 2:00pm. Private interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

You must have so many wonderful memories to cherish and to bring you comfort. My prayers are with you all.
