McELROY, Darrell DARRELL RAY McELROY 1923-2010 Darrell Ray (Mac) McElroy, age 87, died at home on April 3rd after a long battle with heart disease. Mac was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on March 1, 1923, and lived all of his early life in and around Hot Springs. He was an early volunteer for the Navy when our ships were bombed in Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, throwing the United States into a long, bloody war, and spent 4 years in the service - retiring in March, 1946. After returning from the Navy, Mac settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he joined his older brother Alfred in business. The McElroy boys eventually moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they were engaged in the coal mining business. In 1958 Mac and his family migrated to Atlanta and he worked in the automotive industry, retiring from General Motors. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Leona, son Scott of Atlanta, daughter Rocki Lynn Lai, son-in-law Ravi Lai, granddaughters Sydney and Chloe Lai of Danville, California, and daughter Jeanne Sweetman of Denver, Colorado. Mr. McElroy is being cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, Texas 75231, or americanheart.org. The McElroy family will be receiving friends on Thursday, April 8th, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors & Crematory, 12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell.
