Maxine McNUTT Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

McNUTT, Maxine E. After a valiant bout with metastatic breast cancer; and outliving all medical predictions by two years, Maxine Elizabeth McNutt, departed this life on August 25 2013. She was 73. Her remains were cremated. Maxine was born March 25, 1940 in Winona, Mississippi to Melissa Harris, a current Atlanta resident. She spent her teen years in Chicago, IL, and grew to become a leader, pioneer, and organizer at work, in her church and in the community. With her talents, creativity and networking skills, she touched lives during her career in government service. She worked for the US Postal Service; then spent decades in dedicated service to the Social Security Administration. Her work locations included California, Maryland, Minnesota, Washington, DC, and Atlanta, GA. An honored role model and executive, she embraced challenge, earned trust and enabled the performance of individuals and teams under her leadership. She retired in 1995, after a thirty year career. Retired from her job, she remained very active with community volunteerism. The Girl Scouts of America, the American Red Cross, Leadership Georgia and Leadership Atlanta all benefited from Maxine's mentoring, policymaking leadership, cultural exchanges, study groups and international travel logistics. A Christian and longtime faithful member of historic Friendship Baptist Church, Maxine tirelessly worked in the church school, and with the Intercessory Prayer Group. She loved reading, sports, the arts and travel, and was always impeccably dressed. Those left to cherish her memory include family members and a host of longstanding friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Intercessory Prayer Group, Friendship Baptist Church, 437 Mitchell St., Atlanta, GA 30313, where her memorial service will be held Sat., August 31, 2013, at 11 AM. Rev. Emmanuel McCall, officiating. 404-688-0206.

Maxine was a wonderful friend and adopted sister. She was the most giving and generous person both in her professional and in her personal life. I will miss her humor, wisdom adventurous spirit and her classiness. Brenda

Elegant, beautiful, smart, sassy, stylish, committed. The list of superlatives could go on & on about Maxine. However, there was one thing about her that stood out, above all of those for me, and it was that "mega-volts" SMILE!!! Rest in peace dear Maxine. Light up Heaven the way you lit things up on earth.

She helped so many in their careers in the government and I was hired because she made a bold move of bringing on a group of state workers to federal government. A true bold and brassy, smart, stylish flower has been plucked from the garden. RIP Maxine!
