Melvin Benson Obituary


Family-Placed Death Notice

MELVIN L. BENSON Of Dunwoody, Georgia went to be with the Lord after a long battle with cancer and Parkinson's Disease on August 15, 2004. Mr. Benson's family included his brothers, Richard Benson of Illinois and Wayne Benson of Atlanta and his sisters, Joan Christopherson, Nancy Alquist and Betsy Farrety of Rockford, Illinois. Mr. Benson graduated from East Rockford High School in Rockford, Illinois in 1946 where he played football and was selected as a member of the National Honor Society. Mr. Benson graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1952. He served his country with the Marine Corps from 1947-1948 when he was honorably discharged. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers where he served as Chairman. Mr. Benson was President and owner of M.L. Benson and Associates, Inc. for 18 years; a manufacturing representive of equipment lines specializing in liquid and solid handling. He was an authority on electrical precipitation and co-authored training manuals on Dow-thermo vaporizers. Mr. Benson was an avid walker and tennis player and was a senior member of Dunwoody Country Club for 32 years. His senior tennis team of DCC won first place in the senior division in Arkansas. Mr. Benson was one of the founding members of All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody where he served as song leader and lectern for many years. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Ann M. Benson; his children: son, Jim and wife Sandy of Tennessee; Scott and wife Candy of Smyrna; daughter Sharon and husband Brantley, and daughter, Lynne and husband Greg Hall of Athens; his six grandchildren, Brant, Rebecca, Kate, Alex, Kelley, and Alanna. His friends and family will miss his smile, humor and energy. Memorial services will be held Wednesday August 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mount Vernon Road in Dunwoody. A reception for family and friends will follow the Memorial Service in the Parish Hall. The body will be cremated. Father Brian Small will officiate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Vista Care Foundation, 1270 Winchester Parkway SE, Suite 100, Smyrna, Georgia 30080 or The Weinstein Center, 5300 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338.
