Mike Boyce Obituary

Mike Boyce, a former Marine who served a single term as Cobb County's chairman, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, in South Bend, Indiana.

He was 72.

Boyce, a Republican, was elected to the Cobb Board of Commissioners in 2016, defeating former Chairman Tim Lee in what was widely viewed as a referendum against a deal to bring the Atlanta Braves to the northwest suburbs.

In an online post announcing Boyce's death, his wife, Judy, said he died peacefully after suffering strokes at his home earlier this month.

"He was beloved by his family and friends," she wrote. "He was a man of God who always put other people first."

Born in California, Boyce served 30 years in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring in 2001 to become a government and military contractor. Last year, he returned to Notre Dame, where he went to college, to participate in the school's Inspired Leadership Initiative program, Judy Boyce said.

""He had never been happier than he was in the past few months, participating in this program, bicycling to campus and interacting with and mentoring students,"" she wrote. ""He was having the time of his life.""

In a statement, Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, who defeated Boyce when he ran for re-election in 2020, said she was ""devastated"" by the news.

""He loved the county and our country and dedicated himself to making Cobb a better and more inclusive place for everyone,"" Cupid said. ""My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this very difficult time.""

Judy Boyce said memorial contributions can be made to the University of Notre Dame, directed to the Michael H. Boyce Memorial Fund. Gifts can be made online at https://giving.nd.edu/Boyce.

Mike and I were classmates at Notre Dame and entered USMC as 2d Lts in May 1971. He was a true and steadfast friend under all circumstances and a patriot who loved and served his Nation both in uniform and in his time as an elected official in Cobb County. My late parents and my four sisters all adopted Mike as our "second son". He found his true soulmate in Ms Judy and we grieve with her over his untimely and tragic departure. Semper Fi my Brother, until we meet again.

I remember you from your leadership in Hawaii with HMH- 463 and you re-enlisted me on the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. I flew many a flight hour with you as pilot and have a few videos of your flights to remember it all. Semper Fi Fellow Marine, God Speed.

From the first time we met Mike Boyce at the Tim D. Lee Senior Center before he was in politics, we knew he was a most sincere person who cared deeply. The occasion was a Veteran's Day celebration and Mike was the speaker. When he ran for Cobb County Commission Chair, we knew we had to back him because his ideas were in line with ours. We talked him up where ever we went. At his town hall meetings, he would always remember people by name, greet them if they were his close friend. The last time we saw and talked to him was at Donna Kibee's retirement party. We are so sad about his passing. He certain can be classified as one of the good guys. Our deepest sympathy to his wife and entire family. May God comfort you in your grief.

I knew Mike Boyce and he knew me as an impassioned fighter against puppy mills and for a cleaner local economy. He was a true champion of the people. A great listener and had a heart of gold that was open and honest. Mike embodied what we all wish to see in our elected representatives. My condolences to his family on this tremendous loss.

Mike's passing is very unfortunate as he had so much more give to the younger generation with his experience in public policy and leadership qualities. Mike provided Cobb County a holisitic & conservative approach to guiding our municipality which is sorely missed ... My prayers and thoughts are with Judy and the family ... R.I.P Mike

Very sorry to hear about Mike's passing. He was truly a good and caring person. As a fellow Domer and retired Naval officer, we shared stories and greetings when we occasionally saw each other. The first time we met was through the Honorary Commander's Program at Dobbins where we learned we were both Domers. The last time I saw him was at a dog park in Cobb County when he came to see the recent upgrades and changes. He cared deeply about his family, our community, and he loved our alma matter. Fair winds and following seas Mike, we have the watch and you will be missed. Condolences and prayers to Judy and the Boyce family.
