Oliver B. WOOD

WOOD, Oliver B. Dr. Oliver B. Wood, Jr., age 83, of Jonesboro, GA, went to be with the Lord last week. He was preceded in death by his parents: O. B. Wood, Sr. and Nelle Long Wood. He is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 years, Patsy H. Wood; children: Elaine Ann Wood (Randy) Clokey, Russell Oliver Wood, and Bruce Charles (Margaret) Wood. He is also survived by granddaughters Diana Marie Clokey, Mary Catherine Wood, Nancy Claire Wood and Dory Anne Wood. Visitation will be held on December 10 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.in the parlor of First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro. A memorial service will be held on December 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of the church with Dr. Olive Mahabir presiding. Rev. Wood served as pastor of Jonesboro Presbyterian Church from 1975 until 1989 when the church merged with Forest Park Presbyterian and became First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro. He served as pastor there for 21 years total until his retirement in 1996 following which he was designated pastor emeritus. He served as a volunteer chaplain at Southern Regional Hospital for 25 years. He helped start the first night shelter in Clayton County, helped found the Battered Women's Association and Samaritans Together and worked with United Way and Habitat for Humanity. Dr. Wood was a graduate of Mercer University, received his B.D. from Southern Baptist Seminary in 1958 and earned his doctorate from the same school. He was pastor of Demorest Baptist Church and later taught at Piedmont College in the 1960's. He served as pastor of Cornelia Presbyterian Church from 1971 to 1975.
