From just the few times I met Peter I could tell what a warm, charismatic, and cool guys he was. His final actions to avoid hitting any houses as the plane crashed was truly a heroic act. I'm honored to have known him and I send my deepest condolences to the Mallen family.

When I first moved to Atlanta in August 1969 as a 23-year-old officer in the US Public Health Svc. at CDC, it was my good fortune to meet Peter, who like me was apartment hunting. “Pete” had recently graduated from the Univ. of GA and his larger-than-life friendliness, kindness and personal charm were immediately apparent. He invited me and his friend Fred Shaffer - also a young GA grad - to share a nice new 3-BR apartment with him and his beloved dachshund, Franklin, at “Seville” on Buford Hwy. I'll continue to treasure the unique experience of getting to know Peter and his family and friends in those couple of years I spent living with him, fat little Franklin and Fred in the early 70s. It was a delight to visit Pete again at least once or twice more in the 80s. I've always intended to stay in touch and now of course regret that I didn't manage to do a better job of that in the years since. Yesterday it was a wonderful “healing” experience for me and hundreds of others who loved Peter to have the privilege of attending his memorial service at the gorgeous Jewish temple. I was greatly moved by the power and humor! of the eulogies and the beauty of the music. As we exited the sanctuary the final organ number, Sinatra's “My Way,” could not have been more appropriate for this amazing human being and kindred spirit. Coincidentally I've been asked to sing a couple of Sinatra songs at an upcoming “UUCA” dinner, and now in Peter's memory will definitely include that one which sums up so well his remarkable life!

Janie and "kids";

Barbie and I are in schock to hear of Peter's death.

I loved Peter, for some reason......actually, many reasons. He just had that magnetic type of personalty that drew many of us in. If Peter said lets go, you did.

Its impossible to comprehend that Pete is gone because he was such a "larger than life" character.

All of you will stuggle but I hope the time is short when you are able to draw on all of Pete's strength and detrimination, and that your pain will develop into only great memories.

We will always be grateful for the time we spent on the boat in Maine. That was special.

With love,

Ray and Barbie Dan

WHAT A SHOCK! PETER WAS MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR ON DAVIS DRIVE ALL THESE YEARS...A GOOD NEIGHBOR AND FRIEND ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T SEE HIM OFTEN BECAUSE OF HIS TRAVELS AND OURS. YEARS AGO, HIS KIDS USED TO FEED THE FISH IN MY POND WHEN I WAS OUT OF TOWN AND HIS LABS HAVE ENJOYED MY POOL WHENEVER THEY LIKED. THE PASSING OF AN ERA. SO SAD. CONDOLENCES TO JANIE AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY.
