Philip Goodman Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Philip Goodman, 70, died August 23, 2003 at his home in Marietta following a brave two-year battle with cancer. He began as production manager of GPTV and later became the first director of Peach State Public Radio (now the Georgia Public Radio Network). With a hands-on approach, he launched the network on February 4, 1985. The first station was WJSP-FM in Warm Springs. It was followed four days later by a second full-power station, WDCO-FM, serving Macon and middle Georgia. WJSP/Columbus and WDOC/Macon form the nucleus of what has become a 14-station network serving approximately 85 percent of Georgia plus listeners in South Carolina, Alabama and Florida. Mr. Goodman retired in 1992 after 25 years of service with GPTV/PSPR. Mr. Goodman graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1956 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Navy. He served as electronics officer both in the North Atlantic and at Guantanamo Bay Cuba. His life-long interest in electronics began in childhood and he became a licensed Amateur Radio operator in 1953 and used the call letters W5YVT. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League and was recently honored by the Quarter Century Wireless Association for his 50 years as a licensed "Ham." Over the years he built an extensive collection of Heathkit radios and was sought after by colleagues to restore vintage equipment. He remained on the air in contact with Hams around the world until his death. He is survived by his wife, Mickey Goodman; sons, David and Nathan Goodman; a daughter, Elizabeth Azani; six granddaughters; brother, Vincent Goodman of New Orleans; and sister, Gloria Gordon of Concord, CA. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26 at A.S. Turner & Sons. A memorial service will be held at The Temple, 1589 Peachtree Street on Wednesday, August 27, at 11 a.m., Rabbi Jim Egolf officiating. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society, 1825 Barrett Lakes Blvd., Suite 280, Kennesaw, GA 30144.

My major impression of Phil other than being a very close and dear friend, was as a perfectionist. To me, he was the perfect friend. He had a methodical approach to problems which enabled him to solve many complex ones. It was a joy to watch him as he tackled a particularly perplexing electronic project. I, and my family, will miss him terribly. May God bless you Phil, W5YVT (K4FXB).

I believe Phil is in a better place. I'm praying that the love Phil showered on those he knew will ease the sorrow and grief that is inevitable at this time. His example challenges those of us still living to be better human beings.

What a loving tribute to your Dad. Nate, I only knew your Dad a small bit but I see him reflected in you. Your way with words, your gentleness and your great sense of humor. You are your Father's son; what a great privilege. We love you.

As a fellow Ham Radio Operator, Phil and I always had something to talk about. I always saw Phil at Stone Mtn.,

Athens, Augusta, Kennesaw, and other Hamfests, always smiling, and always ready to aid another fellow ham. We worked together at GPTV for 19 years. 73 and SK Phil. CU at the big transmitter in the sky.
