Marie Helen Wikane Rose, 90, formerly of Delhi, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006. She was attended during her final days by her family and the dedicated staff of the Syracuse Home in Baldwinsville.
Born April 27, 1916, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Norwegian/American parents, Chris-tian Johannes Wikane and Frieda Marie Paulsen Wikane.
"Helen," as she was known to most, graduated from high school with honors. Upon graduation, she was invited to work as an assistant to the principal for the West Babylon Grammar School. There she met a science teacher and assistant principal at the West Babylon High School, Fre-derick Rose.
Three weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America's entry into World War II, they were married on Dec. 29, 1941, in Aberdeen, Md. Upon completion of officer's training at Aber-deen Proving Grounds, Frederick was deployed to England.
Loving letters from England convey the support of Frederick for his wife when their son was born in 1944. Helen would not see her husband again until 1946, at which time the war ended and he came home. From the conclusion of World War II and the graduation of her husband from Buffalo State Dental School, she worked as his office manager and dental assistant in Delhi until their retirement.
She is remembered as a kind and compassionate listener, always concerned for the well-being of others, seldom forgetting a name.
She was an avid naturalist, able to identify animals, birds and wildflowers. She could be seen daily, walking and enjoying nature and the community in which she lived.
As a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi, she served for a time as dea-con and friendly visitor while balancing her life as a wife, mother, and office manager.
Her husband, Dr. Frederick Burton Rose II, preceded her in 1994. She was also preceded by her brother, John.
She will be missed by her beloved sister, Evelyn Mansfield of Fountain Valley, Calif.; her sis-ter-in-law, Theresa Wikane of Bayshore; her son, Dr. Frederick Burton Rose III and wife Judy of LaFayette; her daughter, Judith Rose Nutting and husband David of Skaneateles; her grandsons, Frederick and William Rose; her granddaughters, Elizabeth and Meghan Nutting and Katherine Nutting Hoeft; and her six nieces and nephews.
She is at rest beside her husband in Ouelout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.
All are invited to a memorial service to be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the First Presby-terian Church in Delhi.
In remembrance, donations may be made to the Syracuse Home, 7740 Meigs Road, Baldwins-ville, NY 13027 or the First Presbyterian Church, 4 Clinton St., Delhi, NY 13753.
