I was saddened to hear of the passing of one of my classmates from High School. Though it had been many years since I had seen Richard, our graduating class is small enough so that in a sense, each of us carries a small part of everyone else through our adult lives. Hearing of the passing brought back a rush of memories from so long ago. My deepest sympathies to the family, the siblings, the children, nieces and nephews.

I had the pleasure to know Richard as a friend growing up in Richmond at school, church and Boy Scouts. Although we were not in contact the past few years, I retain many fond memories of those days. I was very saddened to learn of his death earlier this week and my deepest sympathy goes out to his family. Knowing him well many years ago I understand that we have all lost a really great guy.

Words could not describe the feeling of sorrow for the loss of a genuine childhood friend and teammate. Formidable tennis player from a famous tennis family. A true gentleman - on and off the court - humble and soft spoken. A loss for the Cougars Class of '76. It was a privledge to grow up around him. Clearly his life touched many lives. May all of the great memories of his life provide strength to your family.

Richard and I started an investment company in 1988. We worked closely together for several years. He and I laughed as much as two men could laugh togehter, mostly about ourselves, and enjoyed each other, in the office and on the tennis court, over those years. We stayed in touch with each other over the years. I enjoyed his last years thru email from the far side of the earth. I will miss him. I pray his enjoyment of life will live on his family. They live with me.

To Richard's Mother:

The best my heavy heart can manage to convey, as I said to you yesterday, is that Richard was the nicest and undoubtedly one of the finest people I have ever known. Although I loathe to lose a tennis match and although Richard ordinarily routed me on the tennis court, there is nobody I preferred playing against than Richard.

You carried yourself with such dignity at today's service -- you reminded me so much of how my deceased mother would've honored one of her sons. May God be with you and all of Richard's family, as must be true.
