BUSH, Col. Robert COL. ROBERT WALTON "BOB" BUSH Col. Robert Walton "Bob" Bush, U.S. Air Force (Retired), 71, died Thursday, January 29, 2009, at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bob was a true southern gentleman who was lovedfor his warm smile, gentle humor, and kind heart. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by his family and friends. Bob was born April 2, 1937, in Augusta, Georgia, to Robert DeckerBush and Rachel Hudson Bush. In his youth, he was an Eagle Scout,active in church workand Boy Scouts graduatingfrom Richmond Academy. He then graduated from Georgia Tech in 1960 where he received his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree and later earned a Master of Science in Mathematics from Florida State University. Colonel Bush served with distinction in the United States Air Force. His decorations included the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Viet Nam Service Medal. During the Viet Nam war, he served as Electronic Warfare Officer on B-52 and EC-121 crews. Post Viet Nam assignments included tours at Scott AFB, Eglin AFB, NATO - Naples, Italy, and Georgia Tech as Commander Air Force ROTC. Following Air Force service, Bob taught classes in mathematics at Kennesaw State University and Georgia PerimeterCollege. Bob was a true renaissance man creatingwood working projects and learning to play bluegrass bass fiddle. He also enjoyed golf, snow skiing, duplicate bridge, family trips in his RV, and HAM radio (KI4FT). He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother, Henry. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Bette Collar Bush, daughter Betsy and son-in-law Rick Higgins of Norcross, son Rob and daughter-in-law Beth of Atlanta, one brother, Neal, of Hudson Plantation, Georgia, and sisters Mary Bush Huff of Atlanta and Rachel Bush Broyles of Charlotte, NC. He was a kind and loving grandfather, and as "P oppy" is also survived by grandsons Ford and Hudson Higgins and granddaughters Skyla and Minka Bush. Funeral services will be on Sunday, February 1, 2009, at 3:00 in the Roswell Funeral Home chapel. Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Interment will be on Monday 10:00 AM at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. In lieu offlowers, please make a memorial contribution to Hospice Atlanta, 6610 Bay Circle, Suite C, Norcross, Georgia 30071 or to your favorite charity.
