Smiley will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11:00AM at The First Baptist Church of Atlanta 4400 North Peachtree Road, Atlanta GA, 30338, Dr. Charles F. Stanley, Pastor. Pastor Eric Thomas of St. Peters Baptist Church Officiating. Interment will be at Kennedy Memorial. Visitation is TODAY 6:00PM - 8:00PM in our SOUTH DEKALB Chapel. Officer Shawn A. Smiley leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Terra Smiley, three children, Victoria, Elizabeth and William Smiley, mother, Ms. Carole A. I am so sad to know that such a fun loving individual has been taken away from us. I know that God knows best but it is difficult. As I sit here and think, I think about the fun times we had as teenagers. Shawn was so serious unless you got to know him and found out he was truly a clown but serious about his future. I guess not living in Georgia caused me to just find out that he is gone. I pray that God continues to cover his wife, children, mother, and family members and lighten the pain that they feel as the days pass and his absence settles in.

Carole, I was so sorry to learn that your son was the Officer killed in the helicopter crash in Atlanta. You have my deepest sympathy. I know from experience that this is a very difficult time for you, but know that our Heavenly Father will help you through your grief. Know that he left a beautiful legacy as attested to by the entries in his guestbook. Know that God puts no more on us than we can bear. Prayers go up to my good friend Terra Smiley and her family. Terra and I are Girl Scout Brownie Leaders (Troop 4105. Small world, her mom was my high school basketball coach. Shawn was a great husband, dad, friend, and supporter to all. He was always looking out for the kids and such a professional man. Dressed in a suit jacket, polo, and fresh slacks even when he was not on duty. I am honored to have known him even if for just a short period of my life. The few conversations I had with him were impactful. Shawn was a great man! He will be missed. Hats off to both officers. May they both rest in peace.

My heart goes out to you Terra, my sister in Christ, and my babies (the children). I know you've had hundreds of people that have been in and out since Sunday and showing their support. It was an amazing sight to see the love everyone was showing, including the 8-10 ATL police that remained outside of the house the entire time. Shawn would be so proud that you and the children are being taken care of. Just as you told me, it's wonderful to know that Shawn knew Jesus and had a relationship with Him. I met Shawn while going to Pathway. I am very sad this happened to him. He was always ready to make someone smile. Always confident and passionate about his beliefs. I am saddened to hear of Shawn's passing. He and I were very close friends in high school and throughout college, but we lost touch over the years. I remember the fun times we had and how he kept me laughing. For some reason, he always referred to me by my first and last name together. I can almost hear his voice now responding to me whenever I was being sneaky or up to no good, "You are the worst Dara Green." Oh how I wish we had kept in touch. Life is so short.
