Thomas Fuqua Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

FUQUA, Thomas Thomas Wilkes Fuqua, died March 31, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Todd Fuqua; sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sneed and her husband, Michael Sneed of McDonough, GA; daughters, Deborah Ann Fuqua of Alpharetta and Nancy and Richard Hurley of Kenmore, WA; sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas W. and Melissa Fuqua, Jr. of Alpharetta, Richard T. Fuqua, David A. Fuqua, and John W. Fuqua all of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Thomas III, Benjamin, Tiffany, Trenton, Ezekiel and Kendall; great granddaughter, Olivia Hurley. He was preceded in death by his 2 brothers Robert and James. Tom W. Fuqua was born on Dec. 1, 1934 in Macon, GA. He graduated from Russell High School in East Point and attended Georgia Tech. He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II and spent time on a ship in the Pacific Theater. After the war he returned and founded Fuqua Brothers Building Company. He later hooked up with Scott Hudgins and Cecil B. Day. His career took off from home building to apartment building to motel building. He built the first Days Inn Motel in Savannah, GA. Motel building took him to Florida and the Carolinas. His career moved him back into building homes. He taught each of his four sons how to build houses. Today, Fuqua built homes dot North Fulton County. He retired in 2007, work was never work, more like play to this dedicated man. Often he would be on jobs and if he found a little mud, sand, or sawdust he would find a broom and tidy up before he left the job. He spent many nights and weekends moving water sprinklers to insure a green newly laid lawn. The love of building kept him going, and kept that twinkle in his eyes. After his wife and children, home building was his second love, and it showed. Tom Fuqua was a former member of Philadelphia Baptist Church, presently a member of First Baptist Church, Alpharetta. He was faithful and read his Bible daily and prayed often. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today in the chapel of Roswell Funeral Home with Dr. R. Dennard Spear, Dr. James Walker, and Rev. Ben Hatfield officiating. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to either First Baptist Church, Alpharetta or Embracing Hospice. Arrangements by Roswell Funeral Home, Roswell
