Beth,
With your invitation today to remember Pete on his 51st birthday, I realized that he had passed on and tracked down this journal. We are all so sad to hear about his death. You and Pete and Cardin were such an important part of my life when the girls were little. And I have a warm spot in my heart thinking of the kids decorating the Christmas tree while we enjoyed chili. I loved all of you dearly and miss the closeness we shared back then. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am glad that my life was touched by Pete. And so glad that Sara's life was touched by a father of such fine character and with a fun-loving spirit. Much love, Mary

To the entire McKenna Family,
I had the most wonderful fortune to meet all of you over 20 years ago when I was a dinner guest of Stephen's at Mr. and Mrs. McKenna's home. He and I have remained friends over the many years and have stayed in close touch. In the process I have come to know each of you and listened from afar as you have grown and faced many of the trials and tribulations of life. I know firsthand what you are feeling right now and I want to assure you that the Holy Spirit is with each and every one of you and will provide you with the strength to carry on and grow from your loss. There is a small candle burning in Pete's honor at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Austin, Texas.
May God's Peace be with you now, and always.

Beth, Cardin and Avery,
Though it had been years since I'd seen Pete, I had always thought very fondly of him and loved seeing his smiling face in my office. Seeing his name and picture in the paper was shocking... my heart goes out to you and his family.

A very clever woman told me recently that pain is inevitable in life; however suffering is optional. Peter would not want any of us to suffer because of his death. He is trusting us to share the pain with each other so we can begin to heal cleanly and to help others do the same. May God bless my friend, his family and all of those who love them.

Beth, from the moment you were born, you possessed a strength and commitment of purpose, that most of us never achieve. I know that these special qualities and your love of family will help you through this unthinkably sad time. I remember meeting Cardin when she was a little one, and my hope is to get to know her and Avery, as the beautiful girls they have become. How lucky you are to have each other. I know having your Mom and Dad, and your brother and sisters with you is the comfort you need. I wish I could also be there with you, but feel my hugs I'm sending to you every day.

I love you so much, Aunt Dicey

Spotting him in a crowded room was always a welcome sight. His wicked sense of humor combined with his gentle nature always made for wonderful conversation.

We love you and are praying for you Beth, Cardin and Avery.

October 28, 2009

Beth,

I have often written in Guest Books of people I have known over the years but never have I struggled so than over what to say now.

I knew Peter before there was you in his live, that redhaired boy with the smile, growing in the McKenna "way."

AND THEN THERE WAS YOU! From the time you two met and marriedly committed to each other in New Orleans, it was so obvious how much in love and life you two were. And what pride he had in being your husband.

Then came your beautiful gifts to our world (Cardin and Avery). You all created a sign to all of how loving a family can be, and yes how busy four people can be as well. As is obvious from the many who have been around you these past days, you shared yourselves with us and the "us" appreciated the presence and the joy-fullness you gave to us.

The many photographs that are seen around the house, on the poster boards and those still in the boxes attest to the many places and times you four have graced. Savor those wonderfilled memories in those times of quiet and in busyness. Hold onto each other and your friends in those times of questioning and sadnesses too.

Words are so difficult at times like these as people reach out to try to comfort you and each other. So we retreat confidently to Scriptures, or a poem or a favorite song, all saying the same theme: "Know for certain I am with you, and know forever-certain how much I have loved you, and yes, will continue to!"

May God give Pete peace as befits this good man. And may God continue to give you and the girls the strength and grace that come from a life well lived and a life well loved!

Kathleen, Meghan, Kevin, Kiera and I love you so much!

May God bless you always in all ways. We are praying for you all.

October 27, 2009

Dear McKenna family,

How sad you all must be to think of your lives without Pete. I have been friends with Steve for several years and met Pete only once but with people like him that was all it took to recognize his sweet spirit. I had the pleasure of sharing a table with Pete and Beth at Chastain Park a few summers ago. While Beth sang every word and danced to the music, Pete watched her with the most beautiful look on his face. What a gift to be loved like that! I pray that your memories will bring you comfort and that you will always smile when you think of him. I know I will.

Pete was a spectacular person.

I always thought of him as another older brother, although I admit he was my first crush too. I think I was about 9 (he was 19) when I made him the ugliest green frosted cake on his birthday. He just gave me a kiss on my head, flashed that killer smile, and ate the whole thing. I never forgot his kindness.

His relationship with Jon has been the definition of a true, loyal, and forever friendship - truly amazing and inspiring.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family in this very hard time.

Pete's smile, his sense of humor, his loyalty, and his love for family are true and heartfelt losses for us all.

I met Pete back in June and have to say he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Always smiling and pleasant. He was very proud of his family. I didn't spend a lot of time with Pete, but I considered him a friend from the day I met him and always looked forward to seeing him at school events so we could catch up. Most of the time we would speak about our families - about how lucky we were to have married the women that we did, and about our girls. Cardin and Avery were the light of Pete's life. He loved them both dearly and was so proud of the beautiful and accomplished young women they are becoming. To them and to Beth, Luana and I extend our deepest sympathies.
