Remembering Ward Otis Winer - A True WOW of a Life
I only recently learned of the passing of Ward Otis Winer, and I was deeply saddened. Ward was one of those rare individuals whose presence left an imprint on the College of Engineering, on his colleagues, and certainly on me. He was, in every sense, a WOW: Ward Otis Winer.
Ward´s professional accomplishments are widely recognized. He was a remarkable asset to Georgia Tech, offering decades of leadership, insight, and steady dedication. But what made Ward truly unforgettable was his character-thoughtful, sharp, and often unexpectedly funny.
One of the things I´ll always remember is his spring tradition of heading up to Traverse City to celebrate the start of cherry season. It was classic Ward: joyful, purposeful, and just a little bit quirky. WOW, right?
Ward was also a gifted storyteller. He once shared a story about bringing a batch of freshly picked mushrooms to a faculty gathering. Ever vigilant, he had tested them with litmus paper before leaving and determined they were safe. By the time he returned home, the same test told a different story. That particular party ended with a trip to the hospital for everyone who tried the appetizer. Only Ward could recount such a moment with so much humor and charm that it became legendary. Another unforgettable WOW moment.
I feel fortunate to have worked with Ward. His sense of curiosity, his quiet intensity, and the care he brought to everything he touched left a deep impression on me. He made even everyday interactions feel meaningful. And he had a way of punctuating life´s moments with his signature presence: WOW.
Thank you, Ward, for the stories, the traditions, and the steady example you set. You were, and always will be, a WOW.

Ward was truly a special person. I worked with him at Georgia Tech in the Dean's office. He was always nice and cordial and no matter what treated you like you mattered. He will be missed greatly.

in 1970, struggling to finish my doctorate at UofM, I asked Prof. Winer to let me do an individual directed study on lubrication fundamentals. This because I was interested in learning about the topic, and because I needed some credits to complete the degree. I was working out of the UofM Dearborn campus at the time and it had to doctoral program. So, I had to travel to Ann Arbor to take many of the courses I needed. That meant that Faculty in Ann Arbor did not know me personally. Thus I walked into Winer's office as an unknown asking for a favor.
I can never forget how kind he was and how much time he spent guiding me through the project. I went on to teach engineering at Univ. of Virginia for 40+ years. The fact that I am writing this note is a tribute to the kind of unforgettable person Prof. Winer was. As most of us realize as we get older, it is the people that we helped and influenced that is our best accomplishment. To the family, I can add my voice to that of countless others who benefited from this wonderful teacher.

Blessings to Mary Jo and the family of Ward Winer. Ward was my friend and my boss although he treated me more as a colleague. He had a great influence on my growth as a man and on my ability to communicate with others effectively. I cherish the 30 years we worked together and have missed him dearly since I retired. At each of the holiday parties he held, he would always seat me next to Mary Jo as he knew that I enjoyed our interaction. Few people that I have had the pleasure to know with have been as warm, honest, open-minded and genuinely concerned for all of mankind as Ward. He was a one-of-a-kind human being, and I am a thankful for my years as his friend.
