William TWEED Obituary

TWEED, William William Gordon Tweed, age 52, died peacefully April 1, 2015 surrounded by loved ones. He fought a long and courageous battle with non-smokers lung cancer. His disease was strong but not as powerful as Bill's hope and determination which he maintained throughout his illness never complaining or wanting to worry his loved ones. Bill was born April 13, 1962 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the first child of James and Patricia Tweed. He was also older brother to Ruth Tweed (deceased), Veronica Killion (Erik), and Ann Elizabeth (Kevin). He was the beloved Uncle to Ruthie (Manuel), Lauren, Saidhbhin, Katherine, Braonain, Jack, Tadghain, Michael, Aodhan, and Thomas. Bill adored his family and his passing will leave a tremendous sadness in all of their hearts until the time comes for us all to be together again. Bill had a wonderful life filled with many adventures and incredible friends. As a young child he auditioned with the Atlanta Boy Choir and was given a spot with the prestigious choir when he was eleven years old. He had a magnificent voice he shared with people all over the world traveling with the choir throughout the United States and Europe. He had the honor of singing at Jimmy Carter's Presidential Inauguration and even had an audience with Pope John Paul. He also sang throughout many of the Cathedrals around Atlanta. He continued working with the Choir throughout his adult life helping to develop other talented singers. Bill attended Saint Pius the X High School in Atlanta graduating in 1980. While at Pius he played on the tennis team and was in several clubs. He was nominated "rat king" by his classmates an honor held for the most outgoing and friendly student. He made many friends while at Pius and the support they showed him throughout his illness brought him tremendous joy and comfort. After high school, he went on to Brevard College in North Carolina where he earned degree in voice and piano. He also became a college cheerleader while at Brevard putting his enthusiasm to good use. He briefly attended University of Georgia where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He finished his degree in Public Relations at Georgia State University where he was also a cheerleader. He enjoyed college cheerleading so much after graduating he tried out for the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleading Team and made the squad. He had many fond memories of his college days and especially treasured all of the friendships he began. Not everyone can say they love the job or career they chose. Bill, however, absolutely loved every minute of working for Delta Airlines. He began his career there in his early thirties. He spoke as recently as last week about just wishing he could go back to work at the airlines. He dedicated much of his adult life to wanting to help Delta be the best airline they could be and he succeeded on many levels. His co-workers meant the world to him and he appreciated each and every one of them. He often said working for Delta was like being a part of a family which was apparent throughout his illness. Delta went above and beyond to help Bill in any way they could. Bill found great relief knowing his friends and co-workers genuinely cared about him. No memory of Bill would be complete without mentioning his incredible sense of humor. He could turn almost any situation into something funny. Even in the worst of times, Bill could put a twist on it and make people laugh. His gift for gab and his comedy routines will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Hopefully, all can laugh a little harder today remembering a funny Bill story. Bill's family would like to thank all of the people who were part of his life. The outpouring of love and support from his many friends has forever touched all of our lives. Much appreciation goes out to his oncologist Dr. Allen and all the medical staff who cared for him. Also, to the dedicated staff at the Halcyon Hospice in Sandy Springs, thank you so much for sharing your kind and sensitive hearts with others. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider donating to a charity event benefiting the Winship Cancer Center in Atlanta. Bill was actively involved in the upcoming April 26th fundraiser to benefit the good work the cancer center does in researching and helping people struggling with cancer. The website is col.fundraiser.org If you kindly donate, please email [email protected] to let him know you donated to the fundraiser if you so desire. Services April 6, 2015, 11:30 AM. at St. Jude the Apostle, Sandy Springs. Reception to follow at the church.

I am saddened to learn of Bill's passing at this late date. I was friends with him at UGA, and will never forget the time he was visiting me in my dorm room, demonstrating a cheer jump that ended up with him kicking the closet door and me having to hastily hide him when my R.A. came knocking on the door to see what all the noise was about. Hysterical. I lost track of him after college, but did track him down once in the early 90s and got to talk to him on the phone, only to lose track of him again. How I wish I had worked harder to find him again in this age of the internet. My condolences to Veronica (whom I also knew at UGA) and the rest of the Tweed family...Bill was truly a gem.

I just realized today that Bill has passed. We weren't close, but I echo what is stated in this tribute, as well as what so many people are stating about him. Rarely in my 53 years have I met someone who was always cheerful and so happy to see a friend when paths crossed. I'll see him again some day and we'll have a great laugh!

I met Bill while doing "special assignment" work as a PMNW FA in ATL. He immediately teased me about my height ( I am shrinking thus am vertically challenged). Because he chose to use humor each time I saw him, it touched a spot in my heart for him.
Bill was classy. Simply that. I can still hear his voice and was interested but not surprised to read of his accomplishments in his beautifully written obituary. I did not personally know of his passing until recently and extend to those who loved him my deepest regards as you all are the blessed ones to have known him well.

I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing and for all he had to endure through his illness. I'm about 7 years older than Bill and an ABC alum, and I always enjoyed seeing Bill and being around the spirit of fun he always brought with him. I remember riding the bus to a concert when he entertained the boys in the choir with one of his stories. They were so enthralled that you could have heard a pin drop, and I was thoroughly entertained myself. I hope your memories of Bill will bring you much solace. I'll keep all of you in my prayers.

I worked with Bill at Delta and always enjoyed his wanting to exceed expectations of Service Inflight. I dropped a trip to him once that he told me turned into a disaster and always remembered that story afterwards. Then I saw him in Management doing behind the scenes to make our product great and I soon relied on him having access to the people who could make a difference within the Company. I am so blown away that he no longer lights the earth.

RIP my Brother,

My wife knew Bill in the PR industry and I knew him from the chapter. Years later we we were on a flight to Orlando to see my future in-laws after getting engaged in New York City. Bill was a flight attendant and after hearing our news "liberated" a bottle of champagne from stores for us to celebrate our news. He was a kind and gentle soul.
