Wayne R. Hardenbergh passed from this life on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023, at 96, one month and 21 days. He was born Oct. 25, 1927, along with his twin brother, Wallace Reed on the family farm just west of Lewis.
Their parents, Reed and Esther farmed raising corn and other crops for feeding cattle, hogs, and chickens. Wayne and his twin grew up helping with all the farm chores, getting up early to help before school. His father died from a farm accident a week before his senior year in high school, so he and his twin were left to take over the farm chores. He married Deloris Flynn in 1950 and they had two daughters, Kristi, and Kathi. He worked in road construction for 35 years tied to the asphalt industry, his last few years being with Caterpillar retiring in 1992 as a Senior Product Engineer. He conducted seminars across the U.S. for states and city highway departments, the National Asphalt Pavement Association and State Asphalt Contractor Association. He also gave technical assistance in all 50 states, Canada and several European Countries, Africa, South America, and Mexico. Wayne's hobbies were riding his motorcycle of which he has ridden in all the lower 48 states and Canada, also being a pilot, put many hours flying for both business and pleasure. Wayne loved flying and got his seaplane license before getting his first plane. Wayne married his wife Alice on March 16, 1987. He retired from Caterpillar in 1992 and made his home with his wife, Alice, on the Brunker farm south of
Lone Wolf, Okla. He always had a project going working around the farm and building many different things. Wayne was an active Mason holding offices and with the Shriners. They would travel during winter to south Texas in the motorhome, visiting family, friends and with Shriners motorhome group to different State Parks. Wayne liked keeping the areas around his home neat and trimmed and his in-laws next door. Wayne is survived by his wife Alice of the home, two daughters, Kathi and husband Sam Cohen of
Salt Lake City, Utah and Kristi and husband Jeff Oritt of
Spokane, Wash., one granddaughter, Madeleine, and four grandsons, Eli, Aaron, Alex, and Jacob. He is also survived by his step-children, Rick and Kaye McCormick, Carla and Brian Jolly, and Darla and Mark DeMay, step-grandchildren, Jessica and Bobby McDonald, Lincoln and Jennifer Taylor, Berry and Amanda Byrd, and Stephanie Mann, step-great grandchildren, Gabe, Graycen, Kallie, Rhyatt, Dixie, Tanner, Deven, Braydon, Presha, and Abel, and great-great grandchildren, Ethan, Kelce, Maise, and Kamryn. He was preceded in death by his parents Reed and Esther Hardenbergh, and twin brother Wallace Hardenbergh.
Service for Wayne are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Lone Wolf. Public viewing will begin Tuesday, Dec. 26 from 2 to 8 p.m. with family present to receive friends between 6 to 7 p.m. at People's Funeral Home, located at 1400 West Main,

Graveside Masonic Rites will be Friday Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at Lewis Oakwood Cemetery, Lewis. He will be buried next to his parents and twin brother in his hometown cemetery in
Lewis, Iowa.
