A Requiem Mass and Rosary will be held for the soul of Anthony (Tony) F. Marino at 4:30 p.m. on November 3, 2006 at St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church, 11600 Atwood, Auburn, CA. Viewing will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Ln., Fair Oaks, CA at 10:30 a.m. on November 4, 2006. Grave side services will follow at noon.
Tony was born in the Bronx, New York City, and grew up on Long Island. His parents were Salvatore and Frances Marino both of whom immigrated from Corigliano, Calabria, Italy. As a boy Tony was very fond of Tom Mix, the cowboy actor and an uncle nicknamed him "Tom", which all of his generation knew him by.
Tony went into the U.S. Army toward the end of World War II. During his military time he was in England, France and Germany. In France he was wounded by a land mine while carrying a litter. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After the fall of Germany, Tony was a guard at the war trials in the Nuremberg Prison.
Tony began his college education at Queens College in Long Island. The whole family moved to Los Angeles over a period of time and Tony resumed college at UCLA. He transferred to USC from which he graduated in Education. He began teaching while continuing his education and he received his first Masters Degree from USC.
Tony met Mary L. Margeson while teaching in the Long Beach area in 1953. They were married August 21, 1954 and moved to San Diego. Tony started Teaching for Coronado City Schools and Mary for San Diego City Schools. In 1956 the family moved to Allied Gardens where they lived until 1980. Tony received his second Masters at SDSU. Tony, Mary and their three sons; Bill, Tom and Steve loved to travel and visited many parts of the West and Mexico.
Tony was a devout Catholic holding membership in the Knights of Columbus among other Catholic organizations.
After retirement, Tony and Mary moved to British Columbia; Bellingham, Wash; and Coos County, Ore. They traveled to many places, including: New Zealand, England and Europe, across Canada and New England. Mary died in Coos County in 2005. Tony moved to Auburn, Calif. to be close to his brother Al and sister-in-law Dixie.
Tony was preceded in death by his wife Mary and his eldest brother, Armand. Tony is survived by his brother Alphonse and sister-in-law Minnie of Pismo Beach, Calif; brother Albert and sister-in-law Dixie of Auburn, Calif; sister-in-law Rose of Roseville, Calif; son Bill and daughter-in-law Kay, of Coquille, Ore; son Tom and daughter-in-law Ana of San Diego, Calif; son Steve of Salida, Calif; grandchildren: Marianela, Tomas, Lisa, Amy and Jesse; and many nieces and nephews. Tony was very gregarious and made friends everywhere he went.
Tony did not wish flowers for himself. Any contributions should be made to the contributor's favorite charity in his memory.
