Gary Lechman Obituary

Gary Frank Lechman
01/09/1940 - 07/13/2015

Gary, a longtime Roseville resident died unexpectedly on July 13, 2015. Gary was an athlete, scholar, father and friend. He was a Roseville High School graduate and shortly after graduation joined the Navy. Upon return, he attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. where he ruled the basketball court. Gary was the first player ever named first team all-conference three times and he became the first Gonzaga player ever chosen Academic All-American.
After college, he created a career as a probation officer, and for more than 30 years worked for Placer County. While working, he also earned his Master's degree in psychology. Gary enjoyed his time in the Roseville Lions Club, hunting, fishing, and has many friends through local basketball and softball leagues, in addition to his friends from college.
After retirement, Gary spent much of his time working and living near Donner and Lake Tahoe, where he then had time to fish often. He worked part-time driving a bus, shuttling skiers in the winter and rafters in the summer. After moving back to Roseville, he lived a quiet life in Sun City.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Ruth Lechman and his son, Gregory Frank Lechman. He leaves behind his children Craig Lechman & Dawn Barsotti (Rick) ,his granddaughter Riley, his sisters Carolyn Stigar & Peggy Lechman, and half brother Eddie Frank.

My wife and I had the privilege of watching Gary play for three years at Gonzaga. He was the last player released by the Seattle Supersonics and we all knew they made a big mistake. I know he'll make the first team "All Heaven" squad. Deepest sympathy to the entire family. Paul and Jan Dahlberg

I worked with Gary for 30 years at the Probation Department. I have very fond memories of playing softball with him and taking probation dept. fishing trips together. I remember being awe struck of a basketball all american plaque on his wall. In addition to Garys name on that plaque was Lew Alcindor, Lucious Allen, Gary Shackelford and Mike Warren. RIP Leacho.

Gary was our neighbor for the last 3 1/2 yrs. a nicer and better neighbor we could ever have. We'll miss the "over the fence" yakking and kidding around and just seeing him puttering in his yard. Our sincere condolences to Dawn, Craig, Carolyn and the rest of his loving family. RIP Gary...... Ron & Pat Oberlander
