Gladys Bender Obituary

Gladys Scott Bender

Born in Gridley, California, January 29, 1915 to her parents Bertram H. and Elsie Slat Scott. She was a sister to Norma Scott March, Bertram Scott, Donovan Scott and Elizabeth Scott.
Her family lived in various homes within Butte County during her youth, but she was primarily raised in Hamilton City, near Chico, California. She met her spouse of nearly 64 years at the age of 15. One of the unique aspects of their by chance meeting was that they both were born on January 29 1915. She and Warren G. Bender, whose Insurance Brokerage still lives on in Sacramento, were married on their 21st birthdays. She and Warren were partners until his death in January of 1999.
While in school Gladys excelled in her studies and in High School was the number one girl's tennis player. Prior to her marriage and for three years thereafter she was a legal secretary and office manager for the Butte County Assistant District Attorney. Upon having her first child, Gladys stopped working for the DA and dedicated her life to the raising of her children.
While living in the Sacramento area, she raised two daughters, Joan Bender Griffin of Carmichael and Marsha Lynn Bender Skinner (deceased) of Auburn. She also had two sons: James M. Bender of Colfax and Stephen D. Bender of Weimar.
When she wasn't busy raising a family or being a supportive wife, she had a passion for gardening and became a master gardener. She also possessed a special flair to colorfully decorate for each holiday. She and Warren lived out the remainder of their lives in Carmichael, Peardale (near Grass Valley) and Penryn, California. Throughout her adult life she was very active in many organizations such as the Pilot Club, Woman's Forum and the Dandelions, a Lions Club affiliate for women. She was a wife, mother of 4, grandmother of 15 and great grandmother of 21. She leaves behind a legacy of maintaining high moral principles, possessing staunch determination, unwavering loyalty and heartfelt love.
A warm and sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Sam Lee and Cana Place in Granite Bay, California, who managed Gladys's care with love and tenderness, insuring her dignity for the last 4 years of her life.
A graveside service will be held for family only at Glenn Oaks Memorial Park in Chico. A memorial service will follow for friends, family and relatives at Brusie Warren Funeral Home in Chico, at 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2006.
Donations can be made in her memory to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Sacramento Valley Affiliate.
