U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, Jerry Lloyd "Jay" Goins, Jr., of Davis, Calif., passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 in Portland, Ore., at the young age of 37.
A brilliant and loving man, Jerry is survived by his wife of nearly 17 years, Darla, and his 16 year old daughter, Brittni, also of Davis. He was preceded in death by his 15 month old daughter, Madison, who lost her battle with Werdnig Hoffman's disease in March of 1996.
Jerry is also survived by his parents, Brenda and Steve Block; his sister Ariana Cardenas; nephew Devin Kelley; step-brother Jeff Block; and nephews Nathaniel and Christopher, all of Grass Valley, Calif. He will be greatly missed by numerous friends and family members: cousin Veronica Wetterstrom and her children Presley, Landon, Kendall and Delaney, of Meadow Vista, Calif.; aunt Tess Pender, of San Jose, Calif.; uncle and aunt Guy and Renee Cortise of San Jose, Calif.; aunts Sue Block and Valerie Robins and their children Alex and Maggie, of Sonoma, Calif.; in-laws Debbie and Greg McDonald, and their children Rita Kay, Cody, Courtney, and Courtney's daughter Kennedy, all of Winterse, Iowa; brother-in-law Rick Winters and his children Rikki and Hayden of Des Moines, Iowa; dear friends Dave and Mona Spillane of Seattle, Wash., and many others.
Jerry was born on May 12, 1969 in San Jose, Calif. After spending his younger years in the South Bay area, his family moved to Grass Valley in 1979. At the age of 17, Jerry joined the U.S. Navy in 1986, and soon found himself stationed in Texas, where he met and married Darla Winters. A career Sailor, Jerry and his family resided in several places, including Treasure Island, Calif., Olathe, Kans., Sepastopol, Calif., Mt. Vernon, Wash. and San Diego, Calif. His most recent transfer was to the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Alameda, Calif. where he worked as a personnel specialist. Jerry was planning to retire from the Navy in six months, after having completed twenty years of service.
Jerry was an avid fisherman who would spend hours delving into the deep riches of riverbanks and other water ways just to find "the perfect spot." He loved many sports; whether watching or playing, or coaching his active, talented and beautiful daughter, Brittni. Jerry was deeply loved as a son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew and good friend. He will be terribly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary, 1700 Pleasant Hill Road in Sebastopol, CA. Jerry will be buried near his daughter, Madison.

Darla & Brit,

I couldn't believe the news when I heard it ~ still can't ~ it's been on my mind nonestop. Close friends that Jerry and I had have been in contact more now then every before.

The first things that popped in my head were all the great memories that Jerry and I had together ~ beating him at basketball, him beating me in fishing, giving him a bad time for buying a race horse, picking him up at the airport when he flew into Seattle, talking as good friends do, but most of all just feeling lucky that I had the opportunity to have met Jerry.

I only talked to Jerry about once every other month, and when we did talk their was always a sentence that had Britney in it. She was his biggest and brightest smile.

My thoughts and prayers are with both you and Britney.
