Joshua Mitchell Hardt
9/6/1985-10/3/2009

Was killed in action on October 3, 2009 while serving in Afghanistan with the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade combat team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado Springs.
The son of Shelley Bell of Oakland and Michael Hardt of Placerville, California. He was born in Manteca, California raised in Northern California. Graduated with the Class of 2004 at Placer High School.
He is survived by his wife Olivia Hardt, formally of Colorado Springs. Brothers Sergeant Jonathon, (Holly) Hardt of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Brother Jeffery Hardt of Auburn, California. Grandparents, Herbert (deceased) and Patricia Hardt of Placerville, Grandparents Sharon Heisey of Pennvalley, JohnLoughlin of Cabot, Arkansas. Nephew of Michele (Tim) Long, of Stockton, California. Deanna (Kevin) O'Leary, of Arvada, Colorado. Matthew (Lori) Hardt, of Cameron Park, California. In-laws to Stephanie (Larry) Ortiz of Auburn, California. Tino (Maria-Elena) De Guevara. Of Morgan Hill, California. And a host of cousins and godchild/niece Aubrey Hardt.
His remains will be flown into McClellan air force base on Thursday October 15th, time is not available at this time.
Memorial Service Friday, October 16, 2009 at 10 am for friends and family celebrating Joshua's life at 3885 Richardson Drive, Auburn, California. Private Burial will be held Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.

Dear Joshua,

I never know or met you Joshua, but on this Memorial Day weekend I cannot forget you as I post to my friends and contemporaries from Vietnam. My connection comes to you from my daughter, who worked with your wife at a daycare center. Your passing brought great sorrow to your wife, those at the daycare center, and to my own daughter. I tried to be strong and comfort her, but was again reminded of my friends gone all too early from life. From all accounts you and your brothers fought and beat back the enemy without the all the support you should have had that day. Rest in peace, dear Joshua.

I am the head football coach at Broadway High School, located in Virginia. Each week this season, our football team will play in honor of a fallen soldier. This week, we will be playing for Joshua and the 7 other soldiers, who gave their life on October 3rd, 2009 from the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. Our team considers this a great honor. Their acts of bravery deserve a fitting tribute. Our players will play very hard tonight and we hope to make Joshua and his family proud. I hope you find comfort knowing that Joshua 's life continues to inspire others... even a small town football team in Virginia. Thanks!

I can't believe you're gone. You never think it's going to happen to someone you know. I was just thinking about a few nights before you deployed, we were at the Chevy's and Angela, Sarah, and I were blowing up your's and Olivia's cell phone trying to get you guys to come over so we could see you one last time before you left. I wish now that we would have been more persistent and just went and dragged your butts over! If I would have known that none of us would have ever seen you again, that's what would have happened. Dear Family and Friends of Joshua Hardt, Tears stream down my face as I look into the eyes of this fine young man, the same age as my own boys. My heart breaks for Olivia and for his family and friends as they have lost someone very, very special. As a former military wife, I understand the fear of losing our loved ones as they serve our country during war time. For you all this fear has become a stark reality. Josh was a very close friend to my husband and I. We got to know him while we were all stationed at Ft. Stewart, GA. He was always smiling and laughing trying to do his best at everything he did. The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms SGT. Joshua Hardt. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joshua. And to Joshua it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Joshua, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero.
