Roger Hendrickson Obituary

Dr. Roger Vik
Hendrickson
4/10/1932-2/17/2016

Dr. Roger Vik Hendrickson passed away peacefully at home in Lake of the Pines on Wednesday, February 17, with family and special friends beside him, exactly as he hoped it would be when the time came.
Born in the tiny town of Lime Springs, Iowa, on April 10, 1932, middle child of Abner and Olivia Hendrickson, he would have been 84 years of age in a few weeks. It was a long, rich and full life.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Anne (Thomas) Hendrickson, his son and daughter-in-law Mitch and Sarah Hendrickson of Nevada City, grandsons Caspar and Duncan, and sister Carmen Evans of Surprise, Arizona. Preceding him in death were a son Vik Thomas Hendrickson and his sister Sandra Hendrickson Gryting.
He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa in 1954 and in 1958 from the University of Iowa School of Medicine, where he was awarded the prestigious Roy A. Carter scholarship. Internship at Southern Pacific Hospital in San Francisco brought him to California. He became a captain in the U. S. Army and served as the company physician for Eighth Army Headquarters Company in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. His original plan to specialize in radiology at Stanford upon return from Europe changed when the opportunity arose to practice family medicine in Yosemite National Park, and he made the life-altering commitment to an extremely exciting practice of general medicine in one of the most beautiful places on earth and a lifestyle of active outdoor living. For the next 20 years he treated patients - both park visitors who often required emergency medical treatment and a village population of park employee families with total healthcare needs to be fulfilled. From delivering babies to removing appendices, he handled every aspect of medical care needed by a community many miles from population centers.
He developed type 1 diabetes in his early 40's but continued to practice in Yosemite for many years until the rigors of this essentially emergency medicine situation, combined with approaching retirement age, dictated a move from the park. After much research, he chose the Placer/Nevada County area for its proximity to "everything" and the ability to continue his active outdoor pursuits. He joined the staff at Auburn Faith Hospital and established a solo practice in the little red schoolhouse at Higgins Corner, where once again he provided a broad spectrum of care. For several years he was the only doctor in the area. Until his death, it was not uncommon for him to be greeted by a former patient recalling house calls made on a bicycle or something like "Dr. Hendrickson, Thank you. You patched me up after I fell off my horse!" He eventually joined Sutter Medical Group, where he was honored with the 1996 "Heroes in Healthcare" award before retiring in 1997.
Throughout all the years dedicated to concerned and caring medicine, he also vigorously pursued multiple other interests and activities. Among his passions were his family, many athletic and outdoor activities -- including Alpine and Nordic skiing, biking, backcountry camping and hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming - and music in the form of Dixieland jazz, concerts, festivals, and musical theater. He skied and rode his bike beyond his eightieth birthday!
As was his desire, no services are planned. In the meantime, old friends might share a loving toast when they come together and think of him.

Dr. Hendrickson was my doctor for years while growing up in Yosemite. Mostly winter ailments (cough/flu) are my memories of him although, he did diagnose a spot on an x-ray as my kneecap inmy thigh.
I knew his family well and in 8th grade, I did yard work one summer when they were on vacation. Part of my payment was a beautiful copy of John Muir's biography.
My prayers and best wishes go out to Mitch et al.

Anne and Roger first took me camping in Germany in 1960 when I was 6. They made play dough with me and taught my sister to develop photographs. When my parents traveled, they stayed with us and made every day tasks such fun! Roger would play guitar and sing and Anne made delicious cherry pies from their tree in the backyard.
They came skiing with us in Austria in 1970 or thereabouts when we were back in Germany.
When my dad joined the Lewis Memorial Hospital team in Yosemite in 1972, I got to see much more of them.
Their creative spirits, their love of nature, the outdoors, and their sons will remain with me always.
Best love to Anne, Mitch, and family

It is undoubtedly a privilege to have been a second cousin
to Roger! Even while being eight years younger, I found in his face an exceptional degree of attentiveness and kindliness. His parents had become role-models for me during summer stays at their bustling home in Decorah, Iowa. They offered warmth and receptivity to one hesitant child. Their overflowing energy, unbounded generosity, and hearty enthusiasm for contributing to the community was very apparent. How pleased i am to observe that this family legacy has been uniquely and successfully carried out in the life of Dr. Roger! Hendrickson.

Dr. Henrickson was our family doctor for many years. I was also lucky to bike ride with him once or twice. Living in LOP, Dr. Hendrickson did make house calls on his way home. He was my babies doctor for many year also. Roger was a true country doctor that loved his work and the people he helped. My heart goes out to Pat and family. The "Kees" were bless to have such a caring, loving humanitarian in our lives. You will be greatly missed Doc.....

We first met Roger our first summer in Yosemite when he responded to a plea from Vik to come see to the needs of our son Randy after a bad fall where the boys had been playing. Roger calmly and gently examined the screaming, scared child at our house and then treated him at the clinic. Our first introduction to Roger...but The Hendricksons were a big part of our "Yosemite" life. Our sympathies to the family. We will miss him.

Dr. Hendrickson was the true definition of a country Dr. With a " bedside manner". I remember the calls from him personally the night of a visit with one of our boys sick to see how they were doing. When I would call for an appointment for the boys, he would say bring them all down and I'll check them all, mind you we would get 1 for the price of 4. At our local fair he came waving from across grounds to see how I was doing. Thank you for taking such good care of our family, you will be missed

I was "summer doctor" in 1963 and Roger Henderickson was my mentor along with Avery Sturm. He was gracious and a great doc. He and Ann were welcoming to me and my then wife Judy. We also skied from Tuolome to the Valley 4 days one winter. Wonderful memories. Thank you Roger.
