GENOA | Boyd Douglas Workman, 80, formerly of Genoa, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at the Hospicare Residence in Ithaca.
Doug was born July 27, 1933 in Clear Creek, W. Va., the son of the late Lesley Workman and Ethel (Williams) Workman Taylor, and had resided in the "Workman's Creek" area near Beckley, W. Va., prior to moving to Genoa in 1957.
Doug was employed as a bus driver and courier for the former King Ferry School, and later with the Southern Cayuga Central School District for 30 years, prior to retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Cortland DAV, and was a member of the former Faith Chapel Assembly of God in Poplar Ridge.
Doug was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served as a firefighter and crash-rescue person from 1953 to 1957. Afterward, he served in the National Guard as a medic, for a total of 19 ½ years of military service, before his discharge with the rating of tech sergeant.
Doug is survived by his sons, Keith (Eve), of Ithaca, and Kevin (Amy), of Locke; his daughters, Pamela Purdy (Phil), of Venice Center, and Kimberly Wojtanik (Randy), of Newfield; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Carroll, of Georgia; his lifetime friends, Paul Turo and John "Dennis" Wharton, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Sue Ann (Stover) Workman on March 26, 2012; by his infant son, Earl Douglas Workman, and by his three brothers, Edsel, Carl, and William Taylor Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 10117 Route 90, Genoa. Spring burial with military honors will be in West Genoa Cemetery, King Ferry. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospicare, 172 E. King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
The family extends their sincerest appreciation to the staff of Claire Bridge Alzheimer's and Dementia Facility, and to Hospicare, for the wonderful care that both have provided to Doug.
