David Walsh Obituary

AUBURN < Mr. David James Walsh, 55, of 315 Owasco Road, Auburn, passed from this life on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at his home. He was born on Feb. 4, 1950, the son of Eloise and the late Thomas Dean Walsh, Sr. After graduating from Auburn Central High, class of 1968, David spent a post-graduate year at Lakemont Academy in Glenora, where he assisted with the sports program. During his years at Auburn High, he lettered in varsity football for Bob Adams" teams, where he was captain in his senior year, and also lettered in wrestling for Dick Jones at a time when Auburn teams were one of the most competitive programs. He graduated with a B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1973. For several years subsequent to graduation, David taught high school physical education in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. He came back to Auburn and joined the family business, Rood Utilities Inc., and was vice-president until diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2005. David was another non-smoker victim of this devastating disease. Diagnosis confirmation at Roswell Cancer Center and treatment at Cayuga Medical of Ithaca, though initially promising, was ultimately unsuccessful, and David spent his last months at home under the care of his wife, Christine, and the dedicated people from Hospice of the Finger Lakes. David will live on in the memory of his survivors, his wife of 10 years, Christine M. Walsh, of Auburn; his son, Colin T.; two daughters, Kelsey and Leah Walsh; his mother, Eloise Miles Walsh, of Auburn; a brother, Thomas Dean Walsh, Jr., and his wife, Nancy, and their sons, Thomas David and John Martin, of Auburn; a sister, Nancy Edwards and her husband, Rich, and their sons, Justin, Todd and Cody White, and daughter, Emily White McKee, and her husband, Kevin C., of West Virginia; and an aunt and uncle, Jean and William Kelley. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at Farrell"s Funeral Service Inc., 84 South St., Auburn. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the Episcopal Church of SS. Peter & John, 169 Genesee St., Auburn, with the Rev. Douglas Taylor-Weiss, pastor, officiating. (please note change in time.) The omission of flowers is requested. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Finger Lakes, 1130 Corporate Drive, Auburn, NY 13021, in honor of David James Walsh.
