AUBURN - John Gary Rhodes, 86 years, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Aug. 22, 2018 at The Matthew House, Auburn.
Gary was born and raised in Auburn. He served on the U.S.S. Achernar as a master machinist in the United States Navy during the Korean War conflict. While vacationing in Florida, he met his wife, Janet, at the Dania Beach Grill. He was the owner/operator of Rhodes Landscaping Co. for more than 50 years in April 2018, Operation Enduring Gratitude and the Knights of Columbus sponsored a trip to visit the Veteran's War Memorials in Washington, D.C. which he called "a trip of a lifetime."
Gary was predeceased by his parents, William G. and Doris A. Rhodes.
Gary is survived by his wife of more than 61 years, Janet; their daughter, Lori (Gary Pettit); son, Stevens (Tammy Jo); grandchildren, Lucas, Alexander, Christina, Daniel, and Nicole; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St., Auburn.
