Margaret Johnson Obituary

CANANDAIGUA < Margaret Johnson, also affectionately known as "Maggie," peacefully left this world on Nov. 16, 2008. She was 85 years old. Margaret, the daughter of Foster and Bernice Jones, was born in Grove City, Pa., and grew up in Detroit, Mich. with her brother, Robert, and sister, Ruth. Margaret and John Rosenkrans were married in 1945. For many years they lived in Seneca Falls while raising their family. Margaret was a much-beloved teacher of English and Speech at Mynderse Academy. She was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving on boards and teaching Sunday school. While her husband served as president of Eisenhower College, Margaret hosted numerous events at her home for the staff, students and townspeople. She was also instrumental in founding the National Women"s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls. In 1988, Margaret married Dr. Marvin A. Rapp, whom she met through their mutual activities at Spare Time Travel in Canandaigua. Marvin bestowed her with the nickname "Maggie." Margaret married Alfred D. Johnson in 2001, a friend from her First Presbyterian Church days in Seneca Falls. She was a resident of Canandaigua for more than 30 years and active in the United Church, where she enjoyed the fellowship of its members. Margaret had many interests. She was a wonderful cook and especially enjoyed baking. She was known for making hundreds of cookies for family "get-togethers." A love of nature was instilled in her at an early stage by her father on the family farm in Indiana and she maintained a lifelong journal of bird sightings. Books and music were a constant joy to her. She was an athlete in her youth and ardent sports fan of baseball, football and golf throughout life. Margaret was devoted to her family and friends, taking great delight in gatherings both large and small. Her warmth, sincerity and wonderful laugh extend beyond descriptive words and will be dearly missed. She is survived by her husband, Al Johnson; and her family: Robert and Maureen Rosenkrans of Seneca Falls, grandchildren, Michael (deceased), Amy and Jeff; Jane Rosenkrans, of Newport Beach, Calif.; Ruth (Rosenkrans) and Russell Fry, of Plymouth, Mass., grandchildren, Christie (Fry) and David MacElhiney and Russell and Stephanie Fry; Peter and Pamela Rosenkrans, of Chester, Va., grandchildren, Darrin and Stephanie; and Eric and Frances Rosenkrans, of Union Springs. She was blessed with the friendship of many people throughout her life. The family is grateful for the loving care by the extraordinary staff at "The Gardens," at M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, Canandaigua. There will be no calling hours. Her Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the United Church, 11 Gibson St. (corner of Main Street), Canandaigua. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home Inc., Canandaigua. To send a message to the family, sign our guest book at www.auburnpub.com and click on obituaries.

Dear Al, Bob, Jane, Ruth, Peter, and Eric,

Aunt Margaret will forever in my mind have that wonderful smile on her face. I have fond memories of being out at the cottage and the wonderful meals she would have for us. When my mom was alive, she would often tell of a phone call she received from Aunt Margaret. The conversation always brought back happy memories for both of them about The Farm days with Gramp and Gramma Jones. We grieve with you. We know that there will still be our Heavenly Reunion yet to come.
