Stella Zanowick Chalanick

Stella Zanowick Chalanick of Auburn, N.Y. passed away peacefully in Auburn Memorial Hospital on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

She was born to the late Samuel and Mary Oristian Zanowick in Auburn, N.Y. on December 23, 1921. Stella graduated from Auburn Senior High School in 1939 and received her RN from Binghamton City Hospital in 1942. Stella served in the Army Air Corp as First Lieutenant Nurse during the 2nd World War. She was stationed in Ft. Myers, FL and Alabama. She went on to work at Mercy Hospital in Auburn and retired from Cayuga County Social Service. Stella was, at 103 years, the oldest living member of SS Peter & Paul Church, as well as a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Church Choir.

She is survived by sons, Donald (Ginny) of Auburn, Michael of Auburn and Andrew William (Carol) of Rockledge, Fla. and sister-in-law, Theresa Graney Zanowick of Owasco. She is also survived by grandchildren, Lisa (Jamie) Rosbrook of Marcellus, Daniel Chalanick, of Frisco,Texas, Matthew (Liz) Chalanick of Auburn, and Elizabeth Chalanick of Baltimore, MD, five great-grandchildren, Kaden, Kendall, Emma, Jack, and Makenna, along with several nieces and nephews.

Stella was predeceased by her husband, Andrew; three brothers and two sisters, Alexander (Helen) Zanowick, Dr. Russell (Mitzi) Zanowick, and Bowden (Bud) Zanowick and her sisters Mary (Emory) Fedor and Genevieve Zanowick; one brother-in-law, Walter Chalanick (Helen).

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in church on November 24, 2025, followed by a Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m. in SS Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 Washington St., Auburn, NY 13021. A Military burial will be immediately following at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Auburn, N.Y.

Contributions in Stella's name will be accepted for the renovation efforts at SS. Peter and Paul Church. Checks can be made out to "St. Peter and Paul Church", with intention in memo, and mailed to 136 Washington St. Auburn, NY 13021.
