Andrew was kind, gentle, honest, and trustworthy. I worked with him for many years when he was in charge of maintenance at Statesboro Nursing Home. Andrew never once said, "It can't be done." There are many cabinets and other items in that building that were his handiwork. He was always willing to do whatever came up. I have a picture of him and some of the residents that I took when he used to have a weekly workshop activity with the men. They made key chains and birdhouses and all sorts of things out of wood that Andrew saved up and cut into pieces in sizes the men were able to handle. I'll never forget the man with only one usable hand that wanted to sand a little board. Andrew fastened a vise grip to a table and put that piece of wood into it so he could sand and paint it with his one good hand. Andrew drilled a hole in it and put in a little piece of chain. I cannot forget the tears streaming down the face of that little man's daughter when he proudly presented her the keychain he had made her with Andrew's help. I carry that picture in my calendar book that I use every day. I have shown it to many new maintenance men and told them, "This man set the standard that you need to aim for." He worked at taking the time in his busy schedule to bring joy to the people that mattered most. I hope all your memories of him are as beautiful as mine, and I thank you for sharing him with me, the residents we cared for, and all the other employees in our family there so many years ago.
