Barbara Coleman Obituary

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Barbara Babs Blakely Coleman, 76, of Southern Pines, NC; formerly of Wilmington, DE and Anniston, AL passed Sunday July 24, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Coleman was born September 19, 1934 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL to the late Robert Maurice and Dorothy (Martin) Blakely. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines. A private graveside service will be held in Magnolia Cemetery with Dr. G. Daniel McCall officiating. Mrs. Coleman attended Stetson University in Deland, FL earning her Bachelors of Science in Biology. She later earned a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. While raising her children in Wilmington, DE, Mrs. Coleman spent fifteen years working with the State of Delaware School System as a school psychologist assisting handicapped and disadvantaged students. In 2006, Mrs. Coleman founded Friends of Moore County Guardian ad Litem, a volunteer non-profit organization supporting the Guardian ad Litem program for abused and neglected children in Moore County. Mrs. Coleman is survived by her husband of 52 years, John Scott Coleman of Southern Pines; her daughter, Laura Blakely Coleman of Portland, OR; three sons, J. Scott Coleman and wife Kristin of Wayne, PA, Robert Mark Coleman and wife Roubina of Westlake Village, CA, Thomas Glenn Coleman and wife Rachael of Singapore; her brother, Robert M. Blakely of Birmingham, AL; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in memory of Babs Coleman to the Friends of Moore County Guardian ad Litem organization at PO Box 1033, Southern Pines, NC, 28388-1033.
