Elizabeth Bebbington Obituary

Director Volunteer Service (Ret) Medical College of Georgia
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Elizabeth (Betty) Sellers Pinson Bebbington, 88, passed away February 27, 2015 at St. John Towers. She was born in Stearns, Kentucky, the daughter of Mabel Elizabeth and Thomas Jefferson Sellers, Jr. After graduating from Stearns High School she attended Bessie Tift College for Women in Forsyth, Georgia. While there she was nominated for the National History Honor Society. After two years she transferred to the University of Kentucky to receive her degree. While at Kentucky she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Following graduation she taught school for two years before being one of thirteen chosen by Rich's Inc. Atlanta for their nine months management training program. Upon completing the program she chose high fashion retail and became assistant buyer of the prestigious Wood Valley Shop. When her husband was deployed she returned to Stearns and taught at Stearns High School. While there the State Drama Festival was announced and she entered four boys in "A Game Of Chess." There was no differentiation between large and small schools. Stearns had 18 students in the senior class. The boys won the State Drama Festival. She came to Augusta in 1954, where her son, Samuel William Pinson III, was born. She was very active as a volunteer at University Hospital and became President of the Women's Board. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Red Cross, and a member of the Camellia Garden Club. She was a former member of the Augusta Country Club and The Woodside Plantation Golf Club of Aiken. She moved to Atlanta for several years, returning to Augusta in 1961 where she became manager of both sportswear and the junior departments at Rich's, also staging their fashion shows. She then accepted the position of Director of Volunteers at Medical College of Georgia where she created a very active volunteer group, both adult and junior. She created the first gift shop called "The Little Store." She also brought comfort to a great many patients. She was preceded in death by her son, Samuel William Pinson III; her brother, Glenn Woods Sellers; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Sellers, Jr. She is survived by her nephew, Glenn Woods Sellers, Jr., Minneapolis, Minnesota. Deepest appreciation is given to the doctors, nurses, social workers and hospice caregivers who took such wonderful care of her. Special gratitude is given to personal caregivers, Doris Johnson and Andrea McClain. The service will be held in Saint Paul's Church, 605 Reynolds Street, Augusta, Georgia, on Saturday, March 14 at 11:00 with The Reverend Doctor Roderic T. Murray III of Portland, Oregon officiating and The Reverend Mary-Kathleen Blanchard assisting. Such a wonderful lady. My 'aunt' Betty. Remember she and my mom sitting in or living room smoking virgiania slims and having a cocktail in the early evening once or twice a week. Remember her helping me in oh so many ways.
