Gwen Murphy

CARNESVILLE, Ga. - Mrs. Gwen Murphy of Carnesville passed away March 30, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. A native of Franklin County, she was born June 3, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Hall J. and Wilma Chatham Carson also of Franklin County, the grandmother of the late Philip Daniel Martin, and sister of the late Debbie Carson Poole. Her most recent career focus was that of a long-time Principals Secretary in the Clarke County School District at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, Georgia. She served faithfully in that position from 1982 to 2002 when she left because of her illness. A wife, a friend, a mother, a grandmother, and a loyal employee, she was loved and cherished by all who came within her orbit. She was a member of Broad River Baptist Church in Eastanollee, Georgia since 1978. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Murphy of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Kari and Philip Martin, Augusta; granddaughter, Rebekah Leigh Martin, Augusta; sister Helen Blackmon, Carnesville; brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Jean Carson, Ocala, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Ray Roberts, Toccoa; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Broad River Baptist Church at noon. The Reverends Shanon Hayes and Jason DeFoor will officiate joined by eulogists Joe Byrd, Milton Mills, and Doug McLaughlin. An informal celebration will follow at the home in Carnesville from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. All friends and family are invited to join together in a further commemoration of Gwen Murphys life. Flowers and plants are welcome, but those wishing to establish an alternative gesture in the form of a memorial, may do so by making a donation to The Memory Garden of Cedar Shoals High School in Athens or by planting a tree as a part of The Tree Chain (Gwens Trees).The contact for The Memory Garden is Edell Raburn.
