Isabel Lamar Obituary

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Isabel Burnett Sprague Lamar died Sunday, February 19, 2006 at home. She was born in Savannah, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wallace Sprague. She was educated at Pape School, St. Timothy's School in Catonsville, Maryland and at Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts. She was presented at the 1945 Debutante Cotillion. Isabel was an enthusiastic world traveler, who always managed to land on her feet. Some of the best years of her life were spent in Paris, France after World War II residing at the France et Choiseul Hotel, mere steps from the Ritz where she enjoyed meeting friends for cocktails. She explored all of the continents with the exception of Australia, which was still on the agenda. Many international beaus sought her attention but it was a gentleman from Georgia who won her heart. Married to Wayland Wright Lamar from Augusta, Georgia. Isabel continued to pursue her interests in that city. She was a member of the Historic Augusta Society, The Richmond County Historical Society, The Augusta Symphony League, and The Junior League of Augusta. As an early supporter of the Savannah Historical Society, Isabel was instrumental in saving several downtown properties. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Swan Lamar and son, Wayland Wright Lamar Jr. and wife, Lori, her brother, William Wallace Sprague Jr., and sister, Mary Swan Sprague Iselin of Middleburg, Virginia. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Historic Savannah Foundation, 321 East York Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401, or to the Savannah Ogeechee Canal Society Museum and Nature Center, 681 Fort Argyle Road, Savannah, Georgia 31419. I remember Isabel fondly. We first met when she enrolled Mary in my school - Big Pine Montessori School. She was an interested parent, and intelligent companion and a delightful friend. She will be missed. My thoughts are extended to her family at this time.

Phil and I wish to extend our sympathy to the family of Isabel Lamar. We enjoyed many happy occasions together when she lived in Augusta. We have kept up with some of her activities through mutual friends in Aiken, Edgefield and Augusta. She was always such a sweet and gentle lady. Please know that she has left affectionate memories and a legacy to be cherished. May God's blessings sustain you in the days to come.
