Ms. Virginia feeding Taylor, August 1982

Ms. Virginia influenced my family in many ways, having been a mentor to my father in the late 1950's. The story is that she was instrumental in his decision to pursue a Master's Degree at Auburn University. As a result of that "fork in the road" decision, I grew up in Auburn, AL instead of the small town my father had been offered a teaching job in, and my father's life took a completely different path. In 1982, when my 2nd child had been born at an Air Force hospital in N.Dakota with a medical problem, she found a specialist at MCG to help him, and let us stay at her & Joyce's home for about 6 weeks while he was treated as an outpatient. (We probably would have had to stay inpatient if it weren't for the doctor being a friend of hers, and it certainly would have been a financial hardship to have had to stay in a hotel). They helped us through a difficult time with loving support, not only letting us stay with them, but in other ways as well. Joyce let my 2-yr. old daughter help her cook every night, something she now loves to do with her own daughter. And the son who had the medical problems (who is now a father of three sons of his own) was ordained as a Baptist Minister on May 6, the Sunday after Ms. Virgina passed away. Our third child is named Zach partly because of her. She is one of the few people who shared a leap-year birthday with my daughter, and I will remember her as someone who always encouraged others to reach higher and be more than they thought they could be. She certainly left her mark on many people!

Virginia was truly a pioneer of psychology in the Augusta area. All of us have benefitted from her paving the way with professionalism, caring, and humor. Thank you, Virginia. You will be missed.
