The world is full of men, but what of men noble and true?
Can you say that you have known such a man?
These men are far too few.
But let me tell you a a story,
About a team of men
Who left behind a legacy
That will not be forgotten.
Highly trained,
They passed every test,
Chosen to fight wild fires,
They were called the best.
One scorching June day in 2013,
When a wildfire raged
The Hotshots were called upon
To battle the fiery blaze.
Armed with tools and heavy gear,
They set out in their prime,
No job too hard for these men,
No hill too tall to climb.
Command was set, plans were made
To tackle the fire's wrath
But winds shifted unexpectedly
And they were trapped in the fire's path.
19 men were caught that day,
The fire drew quickly near
Though they knew they were truly trapped,
Not a one showed fear.
Dig your shelters, men came the command,
Each one knew what this meant
They dug with haste and with one final look
They took to their tents.
Then let us look away,
For we cannot bear
What came to each one next,
Each man endured in those fiery moments,
His final Hotshot test.
And when the aid finally found the men,
The blackened landscape bore
The testimony of death everywhere,
And the men who were no more.
Oh children, your father was so brave,
A man who did his best
In work excelled, he fought to save,
withstanding every test.
Dear widow, may you never shed
another tear at some unhappy strife
For you've suffered enough dread
The day your husband lost his life.
Young sweetheart, your hopes and dreams
Lay in ashes, from the fire's wrath
May you find hope and dream once more
Though sorrow has changed your path.

As a former Volunteer Firefighter from Desert Hills, AZ, I am touched buy this. I also lived in Prescott for a while. I know the area well. From canoeing on the lakes off of Sandretto, to hiking to the top of Thumb Butte.
I didn't know Andrew but as a firefighter my most heartfelt feelings go out to his family. I wish there was more I could do.

Juliann although I dont' know you I want to send my deepest condelances to you. My husband fought wildland for the first 6 years of our life together. Their job is extremely tough and dangerous. My heart aches for you and your loved ones. I saw the memorial in it's entirety and it was just a day of sadness. But, I will always think and pray for you and all of your Husband's family. They say time heals but this one will take a very long time. Please know you are not alone and you will never be alone as God will be by your side forever. Dear Juliann and family, I look at your pictures every day, and my heart aches for you and your children. Although we've never met, I feel the lose of Andrew as if he were my own son. I'm so overwhelmed with what has happened to these wonderful young men. In all the pictures I've seen, there's always that handsome smile.You were such a happy family. There is nothing I can say that you don't already know. I met Andrew briefly this spring. He came into my class at the Arizona Wildfire Academy to help out a couple days. Dear Juliann,
I have to confess that seeing your interview on TV brought me to tears. You exemplified everything good in this world and your message came through loud and clear, these men are heroes.
Learning about this tragedy has been a humbling experience for me and it takes me back to 1980 when my wife and I lost our first daughter to Leukaemia when she was 10 months old. I always still think of her as being close by but out of reach, out of my care but in God's care.
What helped me was having two more children who have now given me grandchildren who remind me of my daughter.
You and your children lost so much when your husband died but I remember when I was little my father being away on business for months and every day my mother would send him an airmail letter and everyday we would write down in that letter what we had done that day. In that way I didn't miss him so much.
Your boys will always remind you of Andrew and in them, and your daughter, a part of him will always be with you.
God bless you and your family and all those other families who lost their loved ones, their heroes.
