Andrew Bettwy Obituary

Bettwy, Andrew Wilson
66, a retired attorney, died in Kingman, Arizona, on September 18, 2011. Andy was born December 24, 1944, to Andrew Leo Bettwy, a Nogales native, and Janice Kathryn Bettwy. Andy was raised in Phoenix, where he attended Brophy College Preparatory (Class of 1962), and received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He began his legal career in Phoenix, first as Assistant Attorney General, then as Chief Hearing Officer for the Arizona Corporation Commission. He then practiced for several years as a partner with the law firm of Shimmel Hill Bishop & Gruender, before joining the legal department of Southwest Gas Corporation in 1985, and relocated to company headquarters in Las Vegas in 1990. Throughout his career Andy proudly served his country as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He taught real estate law in Phoenix for many years, performed countless hours of pro bono work, was an active member of the community through the Phoenix Rotary 100 and on the boards of Valley Christian Centers and Friends of Mexican Art, and enjoyed his longtime vacation home in Strawberry, Arizona. Andy is fondly remembered for his remarkable affability, humble intelligence, outrageous humor, unwavering integrity, tireless service to his clients, and devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Maureen; son Andrew James (Julie); grandchildren Kyra, Nicholas and Alexander; brother Sam (Susan) and nephews Bix, Shea and Bryce; sister Maria; nephew Brody Eldridge; niece Marshell Hunt; uncle Bob Kennerly (Jeannette); and many beloved cousins. Services will be held on Saturday, October 1 at 11:00am at Christ the King Catholic Community, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89118. Andy. It `s been 10 years. I drove down Central Ave. this last week where we used to share offices right across from a favorite restaurant, Durrants. Brought back some good memories.

I knew Andy at the University of Arizona where he was editor of the year book, The Desert. In my senior year I produced an exhibit in honor of President Kennedy that was exhibited throughout the month of November in five buildings on campus - it was a big deal - and Andy made sure The Desert devoted an entire page to the exhibit. I never forgot that.

I was saddened to learn of Andy's passing. I had worked with Andy for the State of Arizona and than in the Private Sector. For a few years we shared an office complex on Central Avenue in Phoenix. I remember the rich Arizona History surrounding the Bettwy family all the way from Nogales to Strawberry Arizona. A part of Arizona History has passed on. As others have commented, Andy had a great disposition and a smile always on his face. Andy, you will be missed!

I have not seen Andy since 1963 but I have fond memories of good times at Brophy: sneaking off in Denny Borst's Lark to a football game in Globe; lunch at Jack in the Box in the Black MG. I was happy to read about his engagement with the community; appears that a good guy became a good person.

To the Bettwy family,
I am saddened at the lost of "Andy". We served together on the board of the Valley Christian Centers. He was a major part of VCCs' annual golf tournament to benefit the scholarship program. Andy will be missed by many. Clarence White, former director VCC, Inc.

I worked with Andy in the Army Reserve. He had a great sense of humor and was an unofficial member of our beloved unit, the 81st JAG. Few others held that distinction which speaks a lot about him. He was a pleasure to work with and an excellent role model for the younger attorneys to follow. He will be dearly missed.

I was shocked to learn this morning of the passing of my law school classmate, army buddy and friend, Andy. Andy and I graduated from Law School together, were admitted 43 years ago to the State Bar of Arizona, and found ourselves in basic training together at Ft Ord, Ca, 9 days after our admission. Andy had a great sense of humor (he was frequently yelled at by the drill sgt for his natural smile)and a friendly, humble nature. He could point out the error of your position in a humble way without offending the opposing counsel. Although we did not see each other often the last several years, I always appreciated his counsel and advice. He was the kind of lawyer we can all admire. Very much like his father, he had a strong sense of justice and great personal integrity. Like his father, Andy was more concerned about helping people, than making a lot of money. He was the kind of lawyer we could all respect and admire. He loved his home in Strawberry, and often spoke of it. I wish we had been able to talk more since his retirement. Please accept Linda and my condolences on the passing of this fine man. Don Anderson

Good to hear from you, Stan. Yes, Andy's my brother. You and I met in San Diego a couple of years ago when you brought Bernard over.

I am wondering if Mr. Bettwy (who was far too young to have left us) is descended of the two Bettwy brothers who came from Alsace in France (part of Germany twice) to settle in Altoona, PA., working initially as electricians for the Pennsylvania Railroad. My good friend in France, Bernard Rocklin's mother was a Bettwy, and Bernard's a family historian.
My condolences to the bereaved.
