Carol Odegaard Obituary

Carol Nadine Hansen Odegaard, 69, passed away November 23, 2003, at home surrounded by her loved ones.  She courageously fought breast cancer for over four years. Carol was born in Brule County, SD on May 14, 1934, the 7th of 8 siblings.  She graduated from high school in Huron, SD.  She married Glenn MacTaggart in 1955.  They moved to Wahpeton, ND in 1967, where they raised their family.  She was married to Arthur Odegaard from 1977 to 1982.  She worked at the Bookstore at NDSCS for 27 years.  Carol was very involved in her community via such organizations as Order of Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, North Dakota Public Employees Association, Hospice, Red Cross Bloodmobile, Tri-State Bookstore Association and the United Methodist Church. In 1996, Carol retired and moved to Chandler, AZ.  There, she volunteered with the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life", the Chandler Center for the Arts, First United Methodist of Gilbert to name a few.  She was an active participant at Sunbird Retirement Community where she enjoyed spending time with her friends, making ceramics and leading water aerobics. She is survived by her four children, Lynn (Mark) Ehlen, Fargo, ND; Scott (Katie) MacTaggart, Litchfield Park, AZ; Robin (Rick) Schmidgall, Gilbert, AZ; Jill (Ward) Blumer, Golden Valley, MN; 10 grandchildren: John and Alex Ehlen, Sean, Kyle and Jacob MacTaggart, Mike, Matt and Sarah Schmidgall, Margo and Abigail Blumer; and her sister, Barbara Schmeichel, Freeman, SD and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life was held on November 25, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Gilbert, AZ.  Memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society or ESTARL.
