Charles N. Johnson, 88, passed away at his home in Paradise Valley on May 31st, 2021. Charley was born in Phoenix on August 26, 1932. He attended North High and graduated with a BA in business from the University of Arizona where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Charley served two years in the Air Force before going to work with his father Ernest W. Johnson, where he was later joined by his son Charley Jr., in building a very successful, large scale vegetable distribution business still thriving today after 70 years.

Charley married Mary Joanne Wimberley in 1954. They had four children; Charles Jr, Amanda, Joanna and Diana, who passed in 2019. Mary Jo passed in 1986, the same year Charley lost his beloved mother, Margaret Nesbitt Johnson.

In 1999 Charley married Helene Barthelemy who has lovingly cared for him for 23 years. Her children Franck and Lauren have also been a great support to Charley and his family.

Charley was a Thunderbird and was well regarded in the greater Phoenix community. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and always making people laugh.

There will be a viewing and reception at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary - 6500 E. Bell Road in Scottsdale on Thursday, June 10th, from 4pm- 6pm.

Charlie was our neighbor for 20+ years. A really enjoyable and fun person to talk and have a cocktail with at our neighborhood functions.

Charley was a great guy. Within 5 minutes of Helene introducing him, the conversation included Arizona native, Wildcat, SAE, Mesilla Valley, farming/ranching and it was as if he had been a friend for most of my life. Over the years, he was such a great host (and Helene a fabulous chef) and a fun person that is was to hang out with or be entertained in their home, often with friends going back to high school. Charley was a true friend & a real gentleman.
He will be missed.
