Daniel O'Neil Obituary

Please sign the Guest Book for Daniel Patrick O'Neil, an environmental engineering student at Virginia Tech, also a resident of Lincoln, Rhode Island, who was a victim of the shootings on Monday, April 16, 2007, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

O'Neil, 22, was a graduate student in engineering and played guitar and wrote his own songs, which he posted on a Web site, www.residenthippy.com.

Friend Steve Craveiro described him as smart, responsible and a hard worker, someone who never got into trouble.

"He would come home from school over the summer and talk about projects, about building bridges and stuff like that," Craveiro said. "He loved his family. He was pretty much destined to be extremely successful. He just didn't deserve to have happen what happened."

O'Neil graduated in 2002 from Lincoln High School in Rhode Island and graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., before heading to Virginia Tech, where he was also a teaching assistant, Craveiro said.

Dan was a cousin to my wife Rosemary and a remarkable young man. The tradgedy of his loss not only affected his family and friends but the countless people that would have benefited from his future endeavors.

My son Phillip was a friend of your son Daniel. My son told me about the barn in Lincoln where he would hang out with Daniel. It sounded so magical and youthful and I am
so thankful that he had the chance to know your son. I purchased several of Daniel's musical CDs and passed them out to friends and family members and they were all so touched by his gift of music words as was I. I have been listening to my CD and it has brought such joy. He was truly a visionary and beyond his years.

I have been reading some of the articles written about him after he passed. The one that seems to resonate with me is that they claim he was destined for greatness and yes I believe that to be true but he was already great. To me your son lived a very full and beautiful life. A life truly blessed and full of loving everyone around him with his music poetry wit and loyalty. In short to me your son was a Saint and one of my heroes. I was just sad that I never got to meet him as they say these days "face to face" But through my son I was blessed to know him. I hope my words bring you solace and please know that he is always with you and that his legacy of love will always burn brightly for others to follow when they are in need. As been witnessed by myself over these past few months.

All my blessings

I went to school at Lafayette with Dan, separated by a few years. One of my dearest friends wrote a letter today to commemorate your son's touch for reaching out, for communicating, for harnessing whatever zest there is to life and never growing tired of sharing it, making it bloom. I've read this collection of thoughts and prayers and cried many times. I remember him fondly; good souls always stick.

To Dan O'Neil's mom and dad,
As an aging singer/songwriter wannnabe, I was so touched by your son's music that I am still brought to to tears when I hear it. He was wonderful, talented, and true. As someone who has suffered personal loss in my own life, may I extend my condolences to you and your daughter, and thank you for parenting such an honest soul.

I was a baby-sitter for your son & daughter back when they were in elementary school. The very strange irony for me is always how we are drawn back to things and often do not get the answer as to why...My husband & I were house-hunting this winter and yours was a home we viewed. I walked in and said to my husband "Oh my God! I used to babysit these children!" While admiring the fireplace I had never noticed as a teen, I couldn't help but stare at two beautiful young adults in portraits. I remarked " I watched TV with these kids, read them stories and tucked them in...they look so solid and intelligent, so good-looking too." My spouse of course could not relate but it gave me such a positive sense of nostalgia to be in that home. Walking through the rooms I remembered two happy kids, comfortable in their own skin - just like their parents. We passed on making an offer, much to my dismay. A few weeks later the tradgedy unfolded. I heard the name and town on the radio. I said "2002" graduate of LHS, he was too young for me to know him. Then a few days later I began to make the connections. On my way to our new home, in Lincoln, I drove buy the services at St. Judes. I saw TV cameras and photographers outside. I saw a picture with a name during the CMT awards on channel 12. Sometimes you never get to know that you've touched a life. Daniel is touching mine. I keep reflecting on why. So far, I have come up with this. I have two beautiful children of my own. I stress over the little things sometimes. I need to slow down and take time for the little smiles and bedtime stories and tucking in. Life is always too short. Sometimes it's even shorter and we don't get to decide that. I will spend my time and that of my children wisely and gently whenever I can. My heart goes out to his sister, Mom, & Dad. From a teenage baby-sitter's rememberance - you are a wonderful family so undeserving of this horror and grief. I pray for Daniel and you all. With lots of love, Amanda from Beauregard Ave.

Our prayers to the family and friends of Daniel O'neil. His talents were so amazing and we have shared many of his songs with friends. He was truly a talented guitar player. We love to listen to Baby it's cold outside. Going to his website has made us feel close to Daniel like he was a friend. I think about him and his talents all the time. I know that I'm speaking for many when I say that this tragedy has brought tears to our eyes. He will be forever in our thoughts.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the sparkle in the snow.
I am the shredded leaves that blow.
I am the sunlight on growing grain.
I am the gentle summer rain.
I am the quiet bird at night.
Circling about; Taking flight.
So do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

RISE UP SLOWLY, ANGEL

Rise up, slowly, Angel.
I cannot let you go.
Just drift softly midst the faces,
In sorrow now bent low.

Ease the searing anger,
Born in harsh unyielding truth
That Death could steal my loved one
From the glowing blush of youth.

Rise up slowly, Angel.
Do not leave me here alone,
Where the warmth of mortal essence
Lies replaced by cold, hard stone.

Speak to me in breezes
Whispered through the drying leaves,
And caress my brow with raindrops
Filtered by the sheltering trees.

Rise up slowly, Angel,
For I cannot hear the song
Which calls you through the shadows
Into the light beyond.

Wrap me in your downy cape
Of sunshine, warm with love,
And kiss a tear-stained mother's face
With moonlight from above.

Then wait for me at sunset,
Beside the lily pond,
And guide me safely homeward
To your world,which lies beyond.

Just spread your wings and take me
In reunion’s sweet embrace,
And we shall soar, together,
To a different time and place.

To The O'Neil Family:
I am writing this brief note to your family because I so deeply feel that when we are faced with the sudden loss of someone so very dear to us that it is one of the hardest things in our lives we will have to face. Yet, I would like to share with you something that touched my heart, it is the knowledge that God will respond to our persistent prayers to help us through any tough time such as this. At Philippians 4:6 and 7 it says that "the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers." Please know that my prayers are with you at this time and I urge you to continue to pray for strength to get through the rough moments ahead.

I am very sorry for your loss. I have experienced losses both anticipated and unexpected. When I was fifteen years old in my first year in high school, my mother died of melanoma at age 54 in December 2004; we were anticipating the loss. As with me, I am sure your loss is emotionally stressful for you and your family.

Your grief may ebb and flow. It has been said that each of us has this well deep inside of us that can be filled to the brim with grief. Every time we cry, we empty out some of the well. But the well fills again. The level of sorrow in your well may lessen as time passes, but it will never run dry. There will always be birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and those days when the well seems to fill to its brim again. Allow yourself time to remember and mourn. It is part of your healing. Grief is a continuing journey.

To the O'Neil family:
Because I live in PA, not far from Lafayette College, I felt a special connection to you and your family. I am so sorry for the loss of your precious and beautiful son. As a parent of three, I cannot imagine how difficult these past few weeks must have been for you.
On Saturday evening, I sat watching a news station sharing the lives and stories of the VT students who died, and my 11 year-old came up and sat beside me. He watched and listened to the amazing things that these young people did. He was especially touched by Daniel's smile and his music. I suddenly realized that perhaps this all happened because our young people today need heroes, and there was not a better groups of young adults around than these 32. Do you realize how many lives Daniel touched this past week? I hope and pray that you will find comfort in knowing that the man you raised has inspired so many people from all over to live their lives with passion and creativity. My son has a new hero. Thank you.
I think it was Daniel who was quoted as saying, "Life is not a track meet, it's a marathon."

When we lost our 21-year-old daughter, also a college student, in a tragic car crash six years ago we never would have thought anyone would understand the pain we have been feeling. But to Daniel's family, know that there are thousands who know what you are feeling and we know that while the pain will never ever go away, it will gradually ease and you will one day be able to smile again when you think of the times you cherished with Daniel. This is a time when you are feeling tremendous support from people all over the world. Soon you will be alone with your grief and you will need to support each other as never before. Seek counseling; seek out others like you as I am with this message. You will find comfort and strength, and Daniel will remain forever. I wish you all the best in this difficult journey.

In my prayers you will forever stay
Although we never met and I did not know you
This is a poem for you to say my adieu
It is a shame you can not be with us today
Due to everything that happened I am still in dismay
Now you are up in a better place
We will never forget your honor and grace
Please look over us, protect us from dangers
You are missed by your family and countless strangers
I wanted to let you know you are in the thoughts of many
Condolences and commiserations are aplenty
I bless your family hope they stay strong
In my thoughts they will always belong

Until you're met again, may God keep you in tha hallow of his hands

Dear Jesus, blessed Mary,
Give him the spirtitual strength and grace he needs
Give him the peace and love we want for him

Just know that thousands upon thousands are praying for you and your family during this time. We will continue to pray, too, in the days ahead as some will be more difficult than others. What a legacy is left behind by such an incredible young man. The stories we have read have been just that -- incredible. Be proud of all he accomplished in his life and even his his death, something good will prevail and his life will not be forgotten.

To the O'Neil Family:
I know that no words can less the painful loss that you feel. I only hope that you can take comfort in knowing that Dan touched so many lives. I went to Lincoln High School when Dan was there, and although I did not have the pleasure of knowing him personally, I do remember his presence and smile. May God keep Dan in His graces, and help him to fulfull the purpose that was meant to be when he was taken.
