David Dyess Obituary

David Neale Dyess, 61, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. David was born December 1, 1946 in Austin, Texas to R. Leland and Ozell Dyess who preceeded him in death. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard and served as deacon in his church. Dave known by many as "Grandpa Dave" lived his life investing in troubled youth in both Texas and Arizona. He loved life and touched the hearts of his family, many friends, co-workers, and strangers in need. He is survived by his wife, Judy, of 32 years, daughter Kelly Hoffman and husband Kervin; daughter Kari Dyess; son John and wife Daina Dyess; 7 grandchildren; sister Linda Sellers and husband Jamie; sister Renee Owen and husband Kenneth; father and mother-in-law Ira and Joyce Lehmann; sister-in-law Jane Herzog and husband Allan; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A memorial service and gathering for Dave will be held at Hansen Arrowhead Funeral Center at Joy, 21000 N 75th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85308 on Monday July 7, 2008. Service will begin at 1:00pm and family will continue to receive friends and share memories until 4:00pm. The family is most thankful for the loving care he received from Evercare Hospice and request memorials be made to Evercare Hospice 3141 N. 3rd Ave. Phoenix, 85013 or Youth Development Institute 1830 E. Roosevelt Phoenix, 85006.

He was the greatest neighbor anyone could ever have. Such an outstanding human being. And caring person. We had some great memories. You will be greatly missed Dyess!

Rest in peace, Grandpa Dave. I will always remember what you taught me and how super nice you were to me. And the nick name you gave me I will also remember, "Candy Cigarettes." May your journey to the great beyond be a good one. Many thanks to you and fond farewell.
