Don Llanuza Obituary

Don P. Llanuza, 80, of Chandler, Arizona passed away on December 30, 2006. Don was born in Chicago, Illinois. He had resided in Arizona for the last 14 years. Don was an accomplished artist and teacher. He had exhibits in galleries around the country and won numerous awards for his artistic works. Don received his Degree from the American Academy of Arts in Chicago, IL. He was President of the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, Chicago, IL and was a member of Oil Painters of America. He is survived by his wife, Roswitha; daughter, Sandra Taylor (Robert) of Queen Creek, AZ; son, Mark Llanuza (Pamela) of Bartlett, IL; stepsons, Neil Cutler (Jennifer) and Barry Cutler, both of Chandler, AZ; grandchildren, Kevin and Jason Llanuza, Kelly, Brett and Ryan Taylor and Austin Cutler; great-grandchildren, Laura, Alisa and Shane; sisters, Ginny Horn of Encino, CA, Suzane Mesner of Boise, ID and his brother, Monty Fisher (Kay) of Canyon Lakes, CA. His father, Pete Llanuza and his mother, Virginia Fisher preceded him in death. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 4th from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd., Scottsdale. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5th at 9:00 A.M. at Black Mountain Baptist Church, 33955 N. Cave Creek Rd., Cave Creek followed by interment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix.

Mark recently spent time with his Dad before the holidays. He showed some of his Dads photography before Christmas and it was very good. From his fathers influence the seed was sewn.........

Don was a very caring father and I considered him a friend. He gave me good advice as Mark and I shared our interests in photography. He was passionate about his work, which he passed onto his son and my good friend, Mark. After loosing my own father this year, I can only hope that Mark and all members of the Llanuza family realize Don is in a better place.

Don was full of enthusiasm for the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, appreciated its history and mission, and served diligently as board member, studio monitor, refreshments-provider, exhibition committee member and president for two years. He was an amazing artist, and was also proud to be the son of an artist, Pete Llanuza, of baseball and Hearst newspaper fame. Don won many awards during his career, but even more importantly, was respected by his friends for his generosity of spirit, encouragement of their budding talents and his kindness of heart. He stepped in at a critical time, to move the Palette and Chisel into the modern era, establishing wise policies and procedures that are still followed today, and which have allowed the P&C to continue to thrive as one of the oldest artists' cooperatives in the United States.

He was also a person of deep religious faith and loved to share his faith with others. We are confident that he is in the loving arms of God, even now, and continuing to intercede for all those he prayed for on a daily basis.

My deepest condolences to his wife, Rose, his son Mark, daughter Sandra, and all their children and grandchildren and other family members. He will be missed by many.
