Donald Allison Obituary
Allison, Donald Cdr.(Ret.)
94, passed away on March 15, 2015. Don was the son of Rev. Dr. John S. Allison and Clara Thompson Allison. He was born May 2, 1920 in McKees Rocks, PA, the youngest of four children. He graduated from Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA. Don was a Naval Aviator who served aboard the USS Denver and USS Cleveland. He was a pilot in the Berlin Airlift; Naval Liaison Officer, 5th AF HDQTRS, Seoul, Korea; served on COMAIRPAC Staff and aboard the USS Essex and USS Intrepid. He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross" for service in the Solomon Island, Saipan and Guam incursions. Don was an active handball player most of his adult life. The last 45 years he was active in round, square and ballroom dancing. He was well known as "Ambassador of Goodwill" at the Sun City Singles Dance Club. His hobby of candy making earned him the nickname "Candyman". At Don's request, no services will be held. He asked that his friends, who have shared this life with him, "Give a thoughtful prayer for the warmth and time we have shared together". Crd. Allison is survived by his sister Jean Sutter of Lincolnshire, IL and her son Robert and family; sister-in-law Mary of Walnut Grove, OH and her daughter Nancy Boyd and family; nephew Bill Heintzelman and family of Greensboro, NC; cousins Charlene Thompson Madera of Surprise, AZ, Homer Brown of MD and Ruth Westman of PA; and longtime friend Margie Kline of Sun City West, AZ. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elizabeth (Sis) Heintzelman and brother Norman (Bud). Cdr. Allison wrote poetry about people and his thoughts on life and the following is one of his favorites: It's been a temporary resting place for the soul as it journeys on. How free to fly o'r boundless space, when released from it's earthly bond. No one can gauge the life we live as we grow from year to year, but the love we share is what we give to our loved ones remaining here. Faith and trust are the watchwords to console those left behind, knowing our prayers are always heard by that greater power behind our mind. I like to think that Don was met by his loved ones on the other side and he in turn will be there to greet his loved ones here when their days arrive. It's been a better world, because Don dwelt with us. So in the years we all have here, let's remember all the warmth and trust we shared with Don on this earthly sphere.
